Should a Carter AFB choke be able to push fast idle cam until fast idle drops out?

  1. Carb newbie question. Electric choke on 1964 Buick 401 Carter AFB. Newly rebuilt motor, issues with warm-up. As the electric choke is doing it's thing, should it be able to push the fast idle screw down the fast idle cam? On mine, I have to open the throttle just a hair and the screw will move down the cam as the position changes. If I never touch the throttle it doesn't seem the fast idle screw can overcome whatever forces keep the choke blades closed. Trying to figure out if this is normal operation for a choke and I am chasing a non-existent problem.

    Thank you in advance.

Your chasing a non-existent problem. It's working correctly. It will NOT release UNTIL you just give the throttle a small tap.

  3. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply Tom. When I set the choke, should I set it to have the choke plate closed all the way when cold, or allow “a credit card thickness” of opening I’ve seen on some YouTube videos?

    Joe,

It depends on the outside air temp. Tighter when colder & just a tad looser as temps. rise. There is also an adjusting screw for the fast idle that can be adjusted to help "Fine Tune" things.
