The '69's been giving me some grief lately. I just replaced the Fast Idle Cam and now it's struggling to turn over. It's buzzing and cranking slow. The battery is relatively new and the charger wasn't adding anything. I did change the timing from 10* to 8* recently and it has started a least a handful of time since. Is there a next check? Screwdriver across the terminals or something else? Does this sound like a starter problem. All responses are appreciated. Thanks, Mike

9 times out of 10, cranking problems have more to do with bad cables and connections. Do you have battery terminal ends? What size cables do you have? Are ALL your connections clean and tight?

I had my stock cables and the thing would barely turn over with a rebuilt starter. It might be time for new cables

Ok, now it won't crank and clicks. I will check the connections. Thanks Larry. Cheers, Mike

There can be "one" thing wrong, there can be a combination of several issues.

Battery, starter, alternator/regulator, and the wires/cables that connect them are so inter-related that a problem with any one of them causes problems with the others. Of these items, the "easy" one to forget is the wires/cables.

I've had to replace starter mtr brushes before. They were 3/4 worn and spring pressure gets lighter.
    Clean the commutator too.

That means starter out I suppose?:(

Does the Voltage Regulator play a role in the cranking system?

    All,
It's so tight with the shield wires and everything else. Remove wires after removal and before install. Please refresh my memory.

Drop the starter to get access to the connections. Disconnect the battery first.

It has had some real abuse lately...my son started the other day and hadn't learned to release the key. He know now.;)

Honestly, Could it not be getting good ground? Oil saturating the mating surfaces.

Yes, that comes under dirty connections.:) Don't want to hold that heavy starter with one arm? I understand.:)

Actually the large 12v + terminal is broken inside. :( But seems I know the problem.:):)

Of course. A failed regulator will either under- or over-charge the battery. An undercharged battery won't allow the starter to crank well. An overcharged battery will cause the battery to fail, which won't allow the starter to crank well.

Ok. New starter same thing. New VR and battery from my truck and it starts. :) Never knew changing a Fast Idle Cam was so complex. Failed to mention the issues with the fuel inlet.;) wow. Thanks all.

Did you have the original starter tested at the auto parts store?

Not yet. I'm going to charge it overnight and try again. The new alternator said replace Volt Reg, but that instruction was dismissed thinking 50 yo quality was fine. Thinking now, NOT!:(:(

    WHAT IS YOUR BATTERY VOLTAGE?

What is the voltage drop from battery to starter solenoid, and from starter body to battery negative post?

It seems to be charging so this whole thing is likely a low battery. :( But I'll likely end up with a new Autozone starter as the loose stud will get me a new one, Lifetime Warranty old cars is great.

All right, charged it up. What would be a full battery voltage be? 12.5 or 13 volts?
