    Hi everyone,

The smog pump on my 1973 Estate Wagon (455) is about to give up the ghost but I don't have enough time to get a new one delivered and installed before our road trip starting on Friday, 3 January. My question is, if I remove the drive belt that turns the pump until I get my hands on a new one, will that cause any running problems? I don't imagine it would given that it's just injecting air into the exhaust system but I wanted to check with you guys before running without it.

Also, any suggestions on where I can buy a new or rebuilt smog pump in the USA?

    Cheers,

As long as the check-valves are in good condition, I don't see any problem beyond not meeting exhaust emissions regulations.

I wouldn't be hugely surprised to find a similar unit was used on various Holden vehicles, although I have zero actual experience with Australian emissions controls.

    Hi Schurkey,

Thanks for your help! That NAPA link is helpful too. I will just do a quick visual comparison with the smog pump in the car tonight to make sure they're a match before ordering. We didn't have emission controls on new cars here until 1975, well, at least it wasn't mandatory until then. It's possible there is some commonality between the manufacturers given they're both GM stables but they'd be pretty hard to find out here. Most people did away with them on cars of that era for more horsepower. I'm pretty keen to maintain the original function of the system in my car and I do care about NOX emissions so I will order the new pump ASAP.

    Cheers,

    Glen
