I recently built an 8.5” for a customer, and when he brought his rearend,he also supplied me with the nice eBay gearset with the parts. I was not impressed even at first glance because the finish on the teeth were not that great, and the tooth surfaces looked like a rasp file. Well, that is one way to sell them cheap. Just delete some of the finishing process. I mocked them in,just as I do with everything else, and I got a goofy pattern. I started with .032” pinion shim, then went to .042”,then,for shits and giggles, went to .052”. Each time adjusting backlash between .006”-.010” for each mock-up. Do you see any difference in the pattern? Exactly. NO,none. Something is obviously jacked with this set,so out they came. When you can change pinion depth in a .020” range, and get zero change in pattern, something is wrong. I installed a set of Motives, and life is good. I know we all like to save some money where and when we can,but when you hire someone to do a job,let them determine what to use. I think Jim thinks the same way. If we would try and go beyond our better judgement, and use them, and they fail, who do you look at? The gears? No,you probably point your finger at the guy that built the whole thing. Let someone like us get the parts,or ask what we would want to use. Spend the extra dollars and get a good gearset, along with the rest of the parts.

I have the mindset of "That's why Im taking it to a pro" I don't know how to do this, let them "do their thing"

I get this crap all the time at my shop. Tell 'em to take their precious cheapo parts elsewhere or have an open wallet. Filters out the riffraff, ya know?

Every once in awhile I'll go to a customers house that wants to supply their own parts to fix the A/C - Heat. Or better yet they have already tried to fix , install the part or have completely torn the thing apart and have no idea what the problem was in the first place. In nearly every instance will tell em up front I'll use your parts but will not guarantee anything but my labor and your gonna pay more than what you would have if you just had called me first. Most have me do the work. Some tell me thanks but no thanks and a few I walked away from due to liability issues.

Sounds like bringing your own food to a restaurant and asking them to cook it! Stupid.
I have brought parts to the place that works on my cars, but only at his suggestion. He doesn't like parts chasing on the internet so if it's not available locally I go source it.
