My Ma ma told me never to look into the eyes of the sun. But Ma ma that's where the fun is... Blinded by the light!

I am so tired hearing about the eclipse. Millions will be straining the roads, public safety services, communications...Dogs and cats living together...Y2K all over again.
    This is our society.....

I've got a 900mm telescope with a solar filter. I'm gonna mount my camera to the scope and take pictures (if I can - I've never mounted my new camera to the scope, so some experimentation may be necessary) while standing in my own backyard.

These things happen every year, sometimes more than once a year but they rarely happen in our backyard. Is it something to see, yes. Is it life changing, probably not unless you are some sort of new age mystic. Did Carly Simon sing about in "You're So Vain," yes. Do I have my glasses, yes. Will it kill me if it is cloudy or raining tomorrow, definitely not.

Maybe I'll take my drone to work tomorrow and see what it can see.

900MM! Where is this at? Are you an astronomer in your day job? That filter must be as big as a golf umbrella if it goes over the big end.

I remember as a kid having a small telescope that had a piece with a rod that you could view the sun with. Something along these lines.

That's the focal length. It's actually a 5" primary on a 42" refractor tube. Not too far removed from your picture. I did have an 18" dobsonian scope a while back, but someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse for it. The scope I'm using was actually the "spotter" scope I used for the bigger one. I kept this one because it lets me attach anything I want to it; cameras, computers and other, smaller scopes.

All I hear about is dont look at it you hurt your eyes. Buy the Eclips glasses. WTF wast you money on that crap. Just wear some welding goggles. You can even grab a lense and hold it to one eye. I did that the last time here in CA about 8 yrs ago. worked perfect. I have yet to hear a mention of welding goggles. Seems like a no brainer to me

I've seen plenty of info on using welding goggles/helmets as long as they are at least #13 (almost unheard of) or #14. They said #12 was not strong enough.

I remember thinking who dimed out the lights. It wasnt such a big deal in the bay area whare i lived at the time . I was looking for clouds or something befrore my neighbor or some one down the street shouted eclips! I Just grabed some dark welding lenses from me tool box. It was over in a few minutes and pretty much all that happens is you stand there sayin Wow mannnnnnn. All these fools creating traffic jams and piles of garbage, only good thing is the sales to local stores .

Rather than look at the sun or moon blocking it, if you know ware to look you can see other planets.
