Hey everybody. I', rebuilding a 1965 400 switch pitch trans. It has the early style low roller clutch in it. The one on the right in the picture. There are two ways to put this in, but only one way is correct. If I put it in one way and then put the center support over it as you would in the picture, the center support will be locked in the clockwise direction and free wheel in the counter-clockwise direction. If I flip the sprag, the opposite is true. Which way is correct? Anyone. Again, this is from the perspective if the picture where the drum is facing up, I put in the sprag and then drop the center support over that.

    Thanks in advance.

I think the one one on the left will only assemble one way, which allows it to
freewheel one way. Make sure the one on the right freewheels the same way.
Never saw one of those, Bruce Roe

I have one in my tranny as well.......i forget how it goes in........but it will match the roller sprag.........these have much better holding thsn the roller sprag.......just like how the 36 element sprags holds better than the roller does in the intermediate clutch

I only have the one on the right. I stole the picture off of the internet :). Does anyone know which way the newer style rotates when it's installed I think counter-clockwise, but being wrong can be a big problem. I like that the newer style can only go in one way. But that's not what I have.

If I hold the lower reaction carrier the center support spins counter clockwise when view looking down on the center support with the reaction carrier below it like assembled in the trans

Thanks for that. After looking at the sprag, that kind of makes sense. Theres a bit of flange that looks like it should seat in the carrier base. I appreciate it.
