I just defeated my nemesis, my steering box. It had a leaking pitman seal and I purchased a replacement box. Fast forward about 3 months and I decided to get this project going. I had about 3 1/2 hours invested and a $24 kit. I would call this project moderately challenging. The hardest part was the teflon seal on the rack piston, loading the ball bearing (easy after you figure it out) and the aluminum ring on the end cap (hardest part). I wanted to rebuild as many components as I could just to say I did it. So far I have done a master cylinder, wheel cylinders, calipers, carb, distributor, alternator and engines. My next project is to rebuild a starter I have had laying around. I know buying parts is probably more practical but I wanted the experience.
John, I do wish you the best with the GS, but I saw your signature line and am dying to ask you a question .... how many A1Abrams tanks can a C5 Galaxy carry? C17 Globemaster?
Ya the scary part is when you're on a 10,000 ft runway weighing almost 800,000 lbs and the end is coming up FAST!
I always said it takes a lot of balls to rebuild one of these steering units! Pun intended I'll never forget the last one I did. Got it all back together, detailed and mounted and when I was cleaning up in the garage I found one of the balls on the floor. Thought I was so careful to count them all but one somehow had escaped.
