I am planning on restoring my cracked black steering wheel on my 68 Riviera. Can anyone provide DIY tips or a link to this project. Thanks, Michael
One fellow told me he has had good results grinding the cracks to a v shape, and filling them with a product called Plastex. Then sanding it flush and painting. I haven't tried it, so I can't personally say how good it works. But I plan on trying it some day.
Here's a couple of links that cover some steering wheel restoration & resizing, there's some filling tips there. I'll follow this thread, as my '69 Skylark is in the same boat. https://www.hotrod.com/articles/120...1-o-reclaiming-stock-steering-wheel-finished1 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=457422
I did this once many years ago on a Corvair steering wheel. Yeah, I know, but it was a Corvair so if I screwed it up no biggie. Seems I remember grinding out the cracks very little and using JB Weld as filler. Used a little at a time to make sure it hardened until I had it built up to where I wanted it. Sanded, primed, and painted. It came out nice.
