Stuck odometer / bouncing speedo

Discussion in 'Interior City' started by Groove Champion, Mar 24, 2017.

  1. Hi guys,

The speedo in my 65 skylark started bouncing and clicking recently. At first I thought it was maybe a bad bit in the cable, but last night I noticed the odometer wasn't turning so I'm assuming it's got stuck and this is the cause.

So my questions are - how do I take the speedo out and what's the likelyhood of being able to fix the stuck odometer - is it a specialist job or can a normal punter do it??

    Thanks in advance

  2. Hi - did a little bit digging over the weekend.

At first I thought the problem was the speedo cable wasnt tightened up properly as I tightened it up and the problem went away. Managed 5 miles and it started again.

So another afternoon spent lying upside down with my head under the dash. The problem isn't the speedo cable. I disconnected it and can turn the back of the speedo by hand it's nice and free to start with but then tightens up, followed by the click and the speedo needle jumps, and then it's back to being nice and free again. During this the odometer doesn't move. I know it's not completely seized but something it's stuck.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks - Paul

I know I am resurrecting an old thread but any tips or tricks for this short of pulling the cluster? I replaced my speedometer cable with no improvement, sticks anytime I get to 9.9mi. Pulling the dash really sucks for 66-67.

You HAVE to remove the speedo cluster from the dash. Then take remove the speedo from the cluster & put the little gear back in place & lube things up with the proper lube.
Probably best to send it to someone that does these kind of repairs because they can calibrate it properly. Only one I know of & have experience with is D&M Restoration.
IF you send them the whole dash cluster it will be returned looking like NEW.

It stinks that I had this whole interior apart a few months ago =/. The 67 is a pain since 90 percent of the wiring harness is attached to the dash. I'll have to see if I can sneak the cluster out without disconnecting too much.

Luckily I have another speedometer assembly so I can send that out and then swap when it is done.

    Thanks!
