Super T-10 an Alternative to an M23Z for Small Block?

I've been searching for an M20 with a large output and fine spline input. Sometimes people will slip a Super T-10 into the search by including the M20 in their craigslist ads.

It looks like a Super T-10 has some nice first gears though I'm reading the 3.42 first gear version is pretty weak. They make a 2.88 first gear that sounds like it would be great for a 3.08 geared small block to replace my M21 with a 2.2 first.

Anyone know if it is a direct replacement? What kind of shifter would I need if my factory Hurst won't work?

I can get one for about 1/2 what they are asking for Muncies around here.

I have a Super T10 I am putting into my `71 big block El Camino. Mine is an iron case, 2.64 1st gear and I think it will be perfect for my 3.36 rear geared car. I think all of the Super t10s have the fine spline input and TH400 rear yoke whereas only the `71-`74 Muncies have them. One obstacle you may run into is the T10 I believe is about 5/8" longer overall than the Muncie so it's possible you may have to shorten the driveshaft. The shifter itself will work but you'll have the change or modify the linkage.

Did you have a Muncie prior to Super T-10? Just curious what you've discovered.

Direct replacement. T10 is slightly longer, but same length as 71 up (fine splne) Muncie. Your factory shifter mounting plate has 2 sets of holes drilled for both trans. So shifter will bolt right up.

They are weaker than an M23. The best combo for strength is iron case, iron mid plate, and high nickle gears.

If you have street tires and don't power shift or dump the clutch on takeoff, you should be ok.

Small block Buick with an existing Muncie M21. So, it sounds good so far.

I run one behind my 455; and it's a 3.44 first gear. Been in the car since the mid 70's. Second Gen (Power Brute aftermarket). Behind a 350 you'd have no problem.

No, TH400. I am converting to a 4 speed. It's been years since I've had a 4 speed car and I've had the itch for a few years now. I've been collecting everything I need over that time frame and had intended to put it in my Buick but decided to leave that car the way it is with the 200-4R and 4.10 gears and put the 4 speed in the El Camino that I recently bought, since that car is all stock and will only get driven and never get to the track. A local rebuilder told me if I could find a T10 with the iron case I would have the strongest one they made, so I took his advice.

So, I think I've found a decent Super T-10 but the speedo drive is on the driver side. Would it be easier to swap tail shaft housings or get a shorter speedo cable?

I would think swapping the speedo cable would be easier, and easy to find. Any automatic cable would work.

I am not sure if you said that correctly. The automatic should already be on the driver side so there would be no change. If you meant passenger side, you can buy a short extension or just change whole cable. I know the older T-10 is a driver side trans.

He already has a Muncie, with the speedo on the passenger side,so if he swaps to the ST10,with the speedo on the driver’s side,he can use the regular automatic speedo cable.

    What Brian said.

It would seem cheaper and easier to get a new cable. I can order one new.

I used a cable for a late 70's Trans Am speedo - worked great. It's longer.

I found a guy that has an M20 he says is out of a 72 Corvette with a shifter and a parts shifter that goes with it.

It specs out as an M20 based on the date code of P2A04A. He want $950 for it but claims it has only about 1,000 miles since rebuild 15 years ago.

    Thoughts?

If you don’t have to ship it,I would get it whether it was rebuilt or not.

Thanks, I'm going to take a look at it next week. I'll keep folks posted.

This should be a pretty straight swap best I can tell. Speedo driven gear might be all I need to swap.

Got some pics of the trans. Anyone see anything that is a show stopper or a reason to be wary?
