I know this is wore out ! But I'm gonna ask again. Can someone tell me there experience With the B&M governor Mods kit. And how many springs did you use? more than (1)
it depends on the weights on gov. , rear end gear, and car . I bet it's a Buick! I think I rdmdmber seeing pink and red springs. Gov mods usually unnecessary. You should have the red strype modulator . .
It is an excellent kit, there really is no other option unless you want to grind on your existing weights. The downside to that is you can't go back if you go too far. My advice is to buy a spare governor and modify that one. CHANGE ONE THING AT A TIME, one weight, or one spring, ONLY ONE THING. It is test and tune and is very time consuming, there is no easy way out or guaranteed recipe for ----- shift RPM. Gotta do the work. The modulator only adjusts minimum and part throttle shifts, and only 2-5 MPH. It has no effect on WOT shift points, that is the governor.
Thanks Guys! Beginning to get the whole picture! Larry I did get get an extra governor. Way back when I brought this up months ago.
Here's a link to an excellent article on someone else's real world experience on tuning a 455 Firebird TH400: http://members.optushome.com.au/iroc-z/mods/TH-400 Governor/governor.htm I've heard that weights generally affect 1-2 shift, and springs the 2-3 shift, but they are interdependant...I dont know how true that is. Please try see if you can record your results in a similar way, and post here. I'll be doing the same this spring, and I'll also track my changes and results....(I'm working on a 71 GS with a PS code 69 Pontiac HO TH400 that short shifts 2-3) Every car is different, but it would give everyone else an excellent baseline to work from.... Thanks!
I know you want an easy recipe to get where you want to be shift wise, but there is no such thing. You are going to have to do the test and tune yourself. That may not be what you want to hear, but it is the truth.
I've got a 3.73 on my 71 - but I havent started yet. Hell, it took me 4-5 tries on my 2 speed 65 GS, and I was only trying to dial in one shift point!
yeah ! I know! your right! everyone is afraid of what they don know. or know how to do. But it will be fun. just a lot of work.
Just did this to my TH350 couple of months ago, it was a breeze (with a lift of course) had fun too third time was the charm for me, I think the rev limiter helped me out to work down to the shift point I wanted instead of working up to it. I started with the inner weights to get close, then fine tuned with springs. I would post my trial combinations for you but I don't think they would help with your TH400. Good luck and have some fun, it's definitely worth the time spent. Tony
The process is super easy, and had alot of fun doing it...it's just the sensation of of "oh crap! when is this thing going to shift....?????!!!!!"
