How much tranny fluid does a TH400 hold including a 9.5 convertor? thanks

    New rebuild or converter swap?

On a brand new rebuild, I add 1-2 quarts to the converter, and 6 to the tranny before start up.

Run it through the gears, and add to the "Full Hot" line on the dipstick.

    It takes about 12 quarts.

Fluid capacity of the THM400 is approximately 23 pints, or 11 1/2 quarts. With a 9" converter, I'd expect less.

I was wondering what the capacity would be for a 1971 buick Riviera, not sure of the size on the converter but it's all stock.

Just changed the filter and about to run to the store to get some fluid.

... plus the extra 2-quarts for my "deep" tranny pan, correct?

Yes, unless you also installed the parts which extend the filter lower in the pan, then it's up to you to run the original amount of fluid or more.

Next, you're going to ask me why I think you should run such a setup or not, and then I'm going to ask you why you decided to run a "deep" pan to begin with.

There is no drain plug in a THM 400 torque converter. If you have a stock pan, you'll only lose about 4 quarts on an oil change. Plus whatever the difference is converting to the deep pan. Be careful not to overfill and cause foaming.
