I'm currently restoring my car and I the meanwhile my TH400 is sitting in the corner.
I do remember it had a small leak somewhere, but it shifted smooth.
Should I be changing gaskets and oil and placing it back, or is there more I should do? Besides cleaning:D

My 2 cents, depends on your situation and what you are going to do with it.

If it's the original trans and its never been rebuilt, I would go through it even if it shifted OK. It will be almost 50 years since it was built. The clutches will likely be worn at least.

If you know it's been rebuilt within the last 10 years or so and worked fine, I'd probably leave it alone and just fix the leak.

If you intend to do a lot of racing, I would rebuild and upgrade it no matter what.

Makes sense. I don't know actually. I bought the car 18 years ago and put only 10k miles on. I haven't done anything to the tranny, but I don't know if it's original. I'll have a shop looking at it, see what they come up with.
I am not going to race with it, only street use.

My rule is pull the trans apart at least every 2 decades and throw
new seals into the clutch packs. If everything is good, put it back
together, $30 of preventative parts could avoid an age related
catastrophic failure. Some of the piston seals I remove are so hard
they break when bent. Bruce Roe
