No one can see the car, get any documentation, or get the VIN until AFTER the auction ends, per the listing terms. :puzzled:  Not that it matters, since Fred tells us it's not a valid auction.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

So what ya wanna bet that if you are the winning bidder that "SOMEHOW" the seller is going to need part of the money to pay the storage fee or needs to pay off some of the surgery bills before you come, and would like to get some of the money wired to him as a good faith payment?

That "can't talk on the phone" is a good way to keep people from finding out you aren't in a Georgia area code or give people any number to track him down with later. No VIN, no additional pics,no phone numbers, and he already wants it to be wired ultimately ("after inspection"). Somehow he is going to get some of the money up front and say stuff like"Well, there is this other guy who REALLY wants the car if you don't trust me" :Brow:

Same kind of scam some of my single buddies have had with these overseas dating services. Girl sounds like a God send, asks for zero money, she is flying over to the U.S. to stay with you and is all excited BUT she ends up in customs needing some special forms she didn't have and missed her flight and has already spent all her money and is part way to you and asks you to just send enough for the ticket :Dou: Yeh, right!

Going to be interesting to see how this guy tries and "work his magic" if it is a scam. Can't imagine it being anything else though.

    A cleverly crafted scam indeed.
He's probably "shill bidding" driving up the auction as well.

I was thinking the same thing (shill bidding).

Other thing is the one's that are good at this (like got me a couple years ago!) think out EVERYTHING.

Some of those questions from potential buyers (posted in the ad) could also be generated by him so a buyer says to himself "Well, SOME GUY asked him if a lawyer could hold the money and he had no problem doing that "for him" so sounds straight up to me".

Think ahead to the police report questions.

Do you have a phone number? No

Did he call you? No, he had just had throat surgery

Did you ever meet him in person, any description? No

What was the V.I.N. of the car? Don't have one.Was promised but never given it before he got my money

Where was the car located? Georgia

Where in Georgia? In some "storage center", never saw it in person .

Any other documentation on the car? No , like the VIN it was promised later, with no details to document the car with, till after the sale.

Just to many convienant excuses for everything a person should DEMAND for any purchase.

Like you mentioned on bidding it in himself, he may be the "High Bidder" himself under another name and after the auction is over call EVERYONE who placed a bid with the same story like "The high bidder didn't have the funding, just had surgery and don't want to relist the car, if you wire me $(fill in the blank)
I'll let you have it.I need to know NOW though because I have ton's of emails from other people who WILL buy it if you don't.

Dead give away is the "BIG RUSH" gotta do it now! "Quick, quick, make a bad decision and make me rich"

Just looked at those potential buyers questions again in detail.

Like the guy that was ready to wire him "150,000.00 TODAY" if he'd end the auction, and the other guy ready to "bring cash".

Like the escrow lawyer, all this will play into his hand later when he is telling you to look at the people who DON't have any problem wiring him the money, so why should you?!!!"

Just think about it as he calls all the bidders with the same story, with the same rush job. $160,000.00 times everyone he can con.Funds wired all in one day,he takes his wire and he is GONE along with your money!

Really hope I am wrong because this could be devastating to those who fall for it.

    scam

This sounds like one of the best scams I've seen. I hope its not but sure sounds like it. Had similar deal about 2 months ago on a "click here to buy it now". These guys are getting better and smarter. I wish we could go back to when "your word" was all that was needed. I don't know what e-bay can do to stop this. These guys just change their user name etc. and they're back in business. Just think of how many people fall for this kind of stuff. It sucks. Scott

Hey! Found a picture of the guy in his "member for under 30 day" My World area.

This is what anyone who get's conned can use for a description to the police

Isn't the Sloan info for the 70 non-existant? Or is that 71 that has that issue?

71 is the "missing" year. Wayne Roberts has the last half of 70 and Sloan has the first half of 70 (model year). This looks to be a "transition" car as the gauges are the pointy lenses and the upper radiator support is metal, although that could have been changed over the years. I'm guessing a Nov-Dec 1969 build date.

    Got Ya!

    Fred, or "ww63",

Don't know if this will help but I was looking for reflections in the glass, chrome and paint, and finally found the guy taking the pictures, on both sides of the curve of the back bumper after I "worked" the pic a little.

No it is not that clear but looks like a black baseball hat and a long sleeve striped button down.White and aqua or blue stripes.

Might be your friend and maybe guy with the ad just pirated the photo's from somewhere so won't help if that is the case.

One thing that I keep noticing about the pictures is they remind me of referance pictures instead of for sale pictures. If you are selling something you want some nice full length side shots, dirt off the wheels, tires and top etc.

"Detective Fritz" would guess the guy taking the pics may have just asked to take some real quick pictures to refer to for his own project car.Or just a "Wow!!!, mind if I take a few pictures to show my friends?"

The keys were in the decklid so it isn't like if it was the seller it couldn't have been taken out side (in a cleaned condition also) and had some pictures like you'd expect taken for someone bragging so hard about how valuable it is.

Anyhow I hope you or the gentleman who own it now recognize the guy in the reflection and we can solve a little more of this.

Could someone go through this whole scam just to gage the value of a similar car they can not commit to sell yet? Just a thought. :Smarty:

I just wish someone would email him and say they had the money to make this car their's and they INSIST he get someone to a phone with him, so he can be asked some questions and if necessary write them on paper and have the helper read back the answers!

Where did it come from, who was the last owner, what the hell is the VIN and documentation  , one on one over the phone, instead of plastered on the web for "dishonest people" to see?

If I had someone I felt was qualified to buy one of my cars I can just imagine telling them "No!, you can't see it till AFTER you committ to buy it!"

    ARRRRRRRRRRRGH! :spank:

    the 70 stage 1 ragtop wasn't a scam

It was not his car in the picture, but he had a black stage one convertible with air (much nicer than the one pictured). it was a very nice car and he sold it for something like 250k. He used the pictures of a simular car, because he didn't want his wife to know. Hes going through a divorce and wanted to sell it and give most the money to his children instead of having to give a large chunk to his wife. That is why he made a new ebay account and used pictures he found online. He figured anyone that wanted that car, would want his for sure, and wouldn't mind getting a better documented true 70 stage one 4 speed ragtop.
