    Ken,
That carriage bolt attaches the bumper brackets to the frame on Flint Buicks, the GMAD cars used regular style bolts with washers on both sides.

    How did I do?

That carriage bolt was not used on the bottom of the rear bumper. The one that goes to the bumper and then the bracket is actually a shouldered bolt along with a nut. I still have the original ones on my 70 and it is not a carriage bolt.

As to the bolt that Beth shows, it looks very common but appears to be the bolt that goes on the front fender bottoms that attaches to the brace that ties it to the radiator support if it is a 5/16-18 thread. It can also be the bolt that holds the alternator brace to the water pump/timing cover.

    Just my guess,
    Mark

OK, 3/8-16........ Hard to tell in the pic :Dou:

Now that I actually fully read your answer Carl, well, you were close. I saw bumper bracket and stopped there.

Duane, you are correct. Bumper bracket to frame. I think you might have seen that picture before, though.

    Thanks Beth! :TU:

When you posted the picture of the bolt Ken, I recognized it as a bumper bracket bolt.

Got any other "wierd" fasteners to guess at?

    This is fun!!!!!!

    OK Guys,
Here's one, and before anyone smart-a**es, it is not a peg board hook.

Looks like a hook that goes into the frame (hole in center of the engine craddle) that was used to pull the chassis along the assembly line. :Do No:

Is it one of the E brake cable support hooks?

OK, I'm back sorry missed the fun!!! As for the hook thing, that is NOT a bolt!!!LOL

The problem with these pictures is there is no size reference. How about a ruler beside the hook thingy (which I have never seen before in my life!)...it does look like one of the e-brake cable supports (the one on the rear control arm which usually fall off) but it also looks broken....

Dana gets an "A", but I gotta tell ya, I really liked Mark's answer.
    Duane

PS. Tim, that's the whole piece, it's not broken, and measures 2" long.
