Time to change out the distributor

    Hello guys,

    I hate my procrastination, for the past few years I've had the Pertronix kit sitting in my garage to install into my distributor.

    I would love to put in the HEI distributor but it won't fit in the Jeep.

    Currently, I have an old Wagoneer Air Conditioning York Compressor mounted directly above the the distributor and power-steering pump, which I converted to OBA "On-board-Air" setup, to inflate tires, air mattress's or save someone else whose cigerette lighter plug air compressors try in inflate 35" tires for the past 20 minutes.

    Jeep Dealerships added the York Customer requested Air Conditioning Air, so it is truly a modified setup for the Buick guys who are stuck with the radial? compressor on the right side of the engine near the exhaust manifold.

    Jeep designed an additional cast pulley setup on the crankshaft on top of the harmonic balancer and ran a separate belt to drive the compressor, via another tensioner pulley, modified from a bracket that relocates the coil and installed a mount between the alternator and water pump.

    The only option I have is either modify the compressor mount taller away from the HEI distributor or reinstall the Pertronix modified system. Work!

    Has anyone else had the Wagoneer A/C System and tried to modify the mount? It also holds the power steering pump below.

    another option would be to send youre stock points distributor(if you still have it)to daves small body hei
    for either a full hei conversion or simply a magnetic pickup for an msd or similar ignition box

    Well I finally finished reinstalling my Pertronix distributor this morning, really happy with the performance and idle again, having removed the points Dist.

    Went to get a local smog shop this afternoon to final tune the engine and found out I need to improve my mixture screws and idle fuel use. I'm too rich at idle and tried to improve my manifold vacuum which only improved at higher rpm's.

    I use the Rochester 2 bbl. Carb. which is great for four-wheeling on off-camber situations but as I remember really bad fuel economy.

    The mechanic said I should rebuild the carb. which hasn't been done in a few years, since I bought it from ReCarbCo over 7 years ago.

    I guess I'm gonna rebuild it, but I have never been very good at rebuilding carbs. not much satisfaction after the rebuild.

    Any suggestions? What kits would be recommended? Whats the best way to clean the carb. bowls and metal in the non-haz. CA environment?

    Mac,
    What model carb do you have?
    IIRC my '70 came with a Rochester 2GV (or something real similar).
    Was a very simple rebuild, not many moving parts, 2-3 gaskets, 1-2 seals, float adjustment was the hardest part and not that hard.
    Great little carbs for what they were intended to do.

    Re: York Compressor Years ago I had add on AC installed on my '69 Wagoneer with 350cid and they had a special bracket that the alternator hung down from and compressor mounted above. I hadn't put HEI distributor on at that time but remember it was a tight fit and a bear to tighten the belts. I'm afraid that during the years since I went with the Buick compressor setup that bracket wandered off so I don't have pictures. I've had no problems with using the Buick compressor but don't know if those can be converted for air source. Mr Ed of Thornton, Colorado
