Hello again Everyone, this is probably a dumb question, but hopefully someone can clear this up for me. I'm about to order some new glass for my 72 GS since I can't find a perfect used glass. Mine looks like it has a slight black tint to it. All the aftermarket companies give a choice of clear or green tinted glass. Is the green actually a "green" color or is it the regular black tinted color? Did these cars come from the factory with the black tinted windows or maybe mine has some aftermarket glass already in it? ( I don't know the history of the car). Thank you in advance for any help.

I have a ‘72 Skylark Custom with Sloan documentation & they sent me a page about option LA or LC-“Tinted glass”, LB or LD “Tinted windshield”.

It’s option A01(TINTED GL ALL) on my build sheet & option L1 on my car order.

For the record my windows do seem to have some of a “green” tint to them. Hope this helps.

    No problem.

I’m also sure if you’re lucky enough to find your build sheet or you decide to get Sloan info that will also give you a definitive answer.

I like that kind of info, then again I’m a car geek:)

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

"Sun bands" varied in shades, from green, brown, blue and charcoal, (some were optional, and some were a standard) depending on make, model, years.

There was tinted (all the glass was green) as well as the sunband, and there was un-tinted, that may or may not have a sunband.

There are other things I can't recall.

Look for the etchings on yours and see if they say ‘Soft Ray’ or not.

Tinted glass option, excluded the tinted window ban which was also optional.

Thank you everyone for your help. I'll just buy the clear glass and possibly put some tint film on it. (It gets really hot here in Florida during the summer.

If your car had a/c it was probably tinted.
If it was me I would get the tinted, especially if you are just replacing one piece.
You will have a better chance of it all matching and then you can tint it any way you want it.
If your current glass is tinted, it could just be a film. Look for the edges of the film to know for sure.
To me, non tinted glass never looks right. Talking about factory tint not add on...

Hi Philip76 and Alain, yes my car did come with A/C. I just got done showing the car to 2 people and they both said it does look like it has a slight black factory tint to it. The car is gold so I think if the glass is actually green it will look horrible. I wish the car was green then there wouldn't have a problem.

Is there any way you could take a picture and post it here?
If your car had a/c it doesn't matter if the car is gold or orange the glass would have been green tinted. Doesn't look green when looking thru it. But it's also obviously not clear either.

Here is a pic of a white GS with burnished saddle interior and green tinted glass, it looks black...

Unfortunately with pics you CANNOT really tell, BUT usually ALL cars with A/C had slightly green tinted glass. The only other option would be the band at the top. IF I remember correctly the top had a band at the top that was shaded slightly darker than the bottom & got darker the higher it went. In my eyes the slightly darker tint the higher it went didn't look bad on ANY cars that came that way from the factory.

Order forms for years 70-72 only show 2 options (no option is all clear), windshield only or all "Soft-Ray Tinted."Either way windshield dark at top. "Soft-Ray" is GM-spec. PPG and LOF made to spec. Vintage "Soft-Ray" was green, now blue. Replacements affect what we're seeing...

Thank you Philip66, the pictures really help a lot. The tinted glass really doesn't look too green at all.

Thank you everyone else for your help. My windshield is good. I'm just looking for the back window and the door glass. I'll look over the pictures sent to me and read the replies again, then make a decision. Thanks again, everyone on this forum been so helpful to me. I appreciate your help.

Just an update on my GS. I order the AMD green tinted glass. They said it will probably take 7 to 10 days to arrive at my house. Then comes the installation. When it's all done I will post a thread on how it looks. Thanks again everyone for your help.
