Re: Reinventing the 1960s SUV. (Re: Tires for "assertive" 1965 Special billy-goat wag No Ed, I'm referring to centering the wheel in the wheel well. That way, you have the most options and can put virtually anything you want as far as tires go. It just seems a waste to me to use a wheel with the wrong back spacing, which limits the room you have on the outside of the wheel while giving you much more on the inside. If you wanted to put a bigger tire on her, you might not be able to. I know you aren't going to drive your car like I drive mine, and that's fine.
if you get the correct 15X7 rims for 1970 you dont have enough back spacing but if you get rims form a 1977 buick or newer the have more back spacing 1/2" more and 245 60/15 fit fine look at these pictures and the ride is great with 245/60/15s or the 255/50/16s
here is a picture of 255/50/16's at speed 75 mph in the rain after a 1700 mile road trip very much a cruiser not a racer
i had 255's on the back and 235's on the front of my 64 convert mounted on JJ coded 15" rally wheels and they fit fine. Never rubbed on anything. I'm not sure what the back space on the JJ wheels is but i am sure some one can let us know.
