Will any th400 converter fit or does it have to be BOP specific?

Any one will fit. Most Buick flexplates I've seen are dual drilled for both bolt patterns, so check that first. And all th350/400 interchange

I seem to recall some torque converters will have interference issues with the weight on the flexplate.

On the trans side, yes, all 350/400 converters will fit. 350 and 400 converters are built to a different assembled height, but it's not a huge difference, and shimming can eliminate that.

On the engine side, the Buick has a specific 3 pad mounting system, designed to allowing mounting while avoiding the external balance weight on the flexplate.

Once again, you more than likely can shim the converter back to miss the weight, if your using a 6 pad Chevy type cover.
