Wow, what happened to the Big Bird Project????? Things were just getting exciting. I sure would of liked to known what the valve spring pressures were on that certain P/S car at the Martin race. I thought Mr. Morgan and a few others did a good job cornering certain people on it. It made great reading watching certain people squirm with lame excuse postings. Gee----- what memory loss certain people get in just a few years time. Now since you guys are calling certain people out on valve spring pressures I thought I might add a few things to the list. At any of the P/S events did any of these items like a, Kilgor trans, knife edged light weight crank, shimmed hydraulic lifters, High lift straight duration cam, Honda connecting rods, Electric pusher fuel pump, Aluminum drums, Needle bearing A-arm bushings, Gear changes in the transmission, After market lighter body parts, get used????????? Cant wait for certain peoples lame posting response. And to add to that list, one of the many modified engines was in the car at Stanton last year. Looking at what the car was running I do believe there's some truth to that P/S grapevine talk. Many of you P/S racers know for a fact that this certain purpose built car went way out of the spirit of the race, but still certain people are allowed to compete. I think the organizers better get their heads out of their a--'s. Grow some balls and put a stop to this b--l s--t. And I can't wait to see this "STOCK ELEPHANT" run. Come on P/S racers do you really believe certain people are going to build this car within the rules and spirit of the race?????? Yea right, when elephants fly. And all for a race where you win absolutely nothing. I hope some of you P/S racers get a chance to read my posting before the mediators pull it. And if they don't please voice your opinion because this event belongs to all of you, not just the few which have endless budgets. $$$$$$$$$

The event recently lost a respected participant. Another respected participant recently lost his beloved wife. Respectfully, maybe you should give it a rest.

I am curious why the thread was deleted. Nothing wrong with questioning the legality of cars in the event, especially when some of them run as fast as they do. I still want to know how you get 618 hp out of a stock hemi.

Look maybe my timing was off with my posting, so I apologize if I offended anyone with the loss of their loved ones. But I also agree with Steve, so I hope after a few days we can continue this discussion. My prayers and thoughts go out to both family's

I have a question for Steve, how much horsepower should a P/S Hemi make? If you are sure 618 is too much why not enlighten us with what you think it should make and why?

Tom, you of all people know what a stock hemi makes. The real number is 505 for a 9.5 to 1 basic stock rebuild, as seen on a dyno at best machine. A pure stock with the 1.5 compression increase and blue printing will be 550-560. Am I close tom?

What ever you guys want it to be! 700HP - 800HP, 8000RPM or 9000RPM. How is that for a Pure Stock answer! Please humble me!

My common sense is telling me to stay away from this post, I`m sure i`m offending somebody by writing this? But I had a set of heads that flowed 280 on one bench and 318 on a different bench.. Maybe 618hp (if that`s the number were using) is 560hp on a different dyno? Plus, the engine was being dyno`ed with no mufflers at that point, no pulley`s, no air cleaner, the incoming air temp was probably 28 degrees, etc. Before somebody tells me the F-OFF don`t bother, i don`t care, i`m just saying....

I don't know, so I can't enlighten you. You are a Mopar guy, so maybe you can enlighten me.....

The factory rating was 425. So, I am curious what a rebuilt/blueprinted within the PSMCDR rules/no grey areas would make.

PS: I hope that Rick will continue to post progress on the car. It looks great.

I agree, I don't know why that other thread was deleted, especially when it was just getting interesting. Isn't that what a discussion forum is for, to air out problems or anything of interest that comes up in this hobby of so-called "pure stock" racing. I enjoy reading these posts from time to time just to keep informed as to what is going on.

A check of some previous PSMCDR spreadsheets might give an indication of a "pure stock" Hemi's HP rating (based on calculations by PSMCDR that were derived from trap speed and car weight.
    Here are some interesting examples:

    Year of PSMCDR race 2009 2010 2011
70 Plymouth Hemi Cuda 426/425 HP auto 495 HP 495 HP 521 HP
    69 Chevy Corvette L88 427/430 HP man 500 HP 500 HP 535 HP
    68 Pontiac F-bird RA II 400/340 HP auto 438 HP 471 HP 490 HP

The factory rating was at 5000 rpm, what happens when you spin it to 7500 or higher? I was wondering why 618 is too much but nobody here has a reason other than "it's Rick". You guys know what kind of air a hemi head flows? I bought a set of heads that were abandoned at a machine shop for thirty years, absolutely stock and they CRUSH my best ported wedge head. I was just curious why Steve thought that the Hemi couldn't make 600 hp legally. Sounds like as usual nobody knows

5000 rpm think about that... Most engines are out of breath not long after that the Hemi is just getting going

It`s interesting to see the numbers keep going up every year. That`s razor sharp tuning and building at work!! For sh!ts and giggles what were the numbers on your Bird the last 3 PSMCDR`s?

I thought you told me it made 680 with the good air no pulleys and headers at 8000 rpm and 618 with the lesser cam on the diffrent dyno. When does a engine making between 1.4 to 1.5 hp per cubic inch seem a bit much.Would you guys be as happy if it were s chevy of Ford engine doing those #s.It is just getting stupid. Now to be the man you end up spending $150,000 to $200,000 .There has been more spent on that engine than many have in their whole cars. Its like competeing with a steroid user. Its making me not even want to go to any of the events and I know a guy that was going to the Pure Stock Drags and had a car ready but has already seen enough and wont bother even going to spectate.Call the real fast cars Stockers but dont call them Pure

Again, I don't know, but can a hemi with a stock cam turn 7500 rpm and still be making power :Do No:

I'll still have a blast running my 14.40 monster against whoever they pair me up with. I think a big majority of the particpants could care less about what is going on with the top pissing match cars but to not go at all because of it seems kind of lame.

OK Seth, a 14.40 goal for my 383 Charger means I've got to get a half-second out of my heap. I'll take you on ! I have a testicle-stretching 61.8 HP -- dynoed by my bleeding eyeballs. :bglasses: Mine was rated at 330, so I will be doing it with 1/5th the horsepower that it originally came with. And if you call me out that I'm cheating with LESS horsepower, I will make your life miserable. Fortunately, for my self-glorified challenge, a Mopar will win !!!! Brand-loyalty will be a moot point.

MOST, if not all of the top engines in the 60's were WAY under-rated. The 425 hp deal was mostly to throw the Insurance companies off so they'd underwrite the cars. Also, to allow certain combo's to dominate in Stock class NHRA racing. Chevy and Pontiac "invented" this practice (for Drag Racing) don't blame Mopar or Ford for taking advantage of it. Anybody think a 428 CJ only made 10 hp more than a 390 GT from a year earlier. Or that a Super Duty Pontiac actually made 405 hp. My own, 300 hp 57 Ford made (according to Dan Jansen's calculations 344 REAR WHEEL HP!) And I Know it to be very original. I personally want to see the RR run. I also want to see somebody build a good 383 runner with the same detail and care. Bet that'd be interesting.

Sounds like a grudge match Casey! I have to warn you though I'm building a fresh short block to correct my 90 PSI cranking compression and 4800 RPM shift points LOL!

Frank I would also love to see somebody build a max effort 68 383 RR!
