using 3.8 timing cover and oil pump on a 350

Discussion in 'Small Block Tech' started by GranSportSedan, Feb 18, 2018.

  1. anybody remember a thread quite a while back here that discussed a guy who converted buick 350 to 3.8 gearator style oil pump ? seems like he had to cut and splice two different timing covers to do it

I don't recall that but didn't you once mention a Rover cover/pump would swap?

  3. Yes but the later Rover covers don't use a distributor and have a different oil pan flange

Not worth the hassle, the distributor driven pump does fine:D

They're still driven off of the cam, so not worth the effort to convert to, if it was driven off of the crank shaft that would be a different story!

Requires a different cam for it to work as well, so that would mean a custom machined cam to run one on a sbb 350 or use Rover cam in a 215/300/340.

I thought the 3800 oil pump is a gerotor style driven off the crank?

My post was about the Rover cover.

I didn't know about the 3.8 cover, good to know. That one would probably be worth converting to if at all possible!

I think Bob was referring to the 3800 cover. The oil pressure in my 98 Rivvy is unbelievable. Even on the hottest day with the A/C blasting, I've never seen the oil pressure go below low 30's at a 600 RPM idle. Breathe on the gas and it goes right to 60. I just turned 180K. It would be so awesome if we could adapt that type of pump to the older V8's. Probably not possible.

Kind of how the LS engines oil but the pump mounts to the front of the block instead of being integrated to the front cover.

I was thinking about looking into seeing if I could adapt an LS oil pump to a sbb 350.

  10. with a little more research i have discovered the turbo regal guys have done it by using the top half of a regular cover and the bottom half of a gearator style cover. i did a google search and found a few references to this topic

I had the article on my computer someplace. can't find it now. looked at doing it also. similar to the rover setup. wonder if bmw uses the same set up as rover.

  13. using the gearator style pump would take most of the strain off the cam gear and distributor gear

They made one that used a distributor and had crank pump one year on the Rover .

There is an interim 3.9/4.2 Rover cover that has the Gerotor crank driven oil pump with distributor hole.

More info on the Rover cover. It is found in 94-95 Defender and Range Rover. Look for EFI motor with serpentine belt. It uses a longer key to drive the oil pump.
