I am looking for a 200r4 torque converter for a 70 skylark with a mild 455 and 3.73 gears. The car wil be for street/highway driving. What type of torque converter would you reccomend? What is a good brand & stall speed?
I have a stock D5 converter from an `87 Grand National in mine which has a 2,200 stall from the factory because of the turbo in those cars. I absolutely love it. Under normal driving conditions you would never know it was anything different than your average stock convertor. Under power it will brake stall to 2,200, I've tried it  And the car launches hard at the track. I get a 1.82 60ft. with a mild 350. There are probably comparable converters on the market but the D5 would be my recommendation. Bill
Re: What type torque converter do you reccomend for a 200r4 I have a D5 that was rebuilt when I bought it, retains it's LU, put about 500 miles on it and switched over to a 2800 stall (Turbo car:TU: ) You don't say what 2004r you have, but the stock D5 is a great TC. $110 shipped to your door:beer Rich
A D5 will work on a mostly stock motor. I am running about 450hp and it will blow through a modified D5 at the track. Works good on the street. The best 200r4 converters are PTC's.
For a mild combo, the D5 is great. Especially since they are so cheap used.:TU: My combo is a smidgen more radical and I could use more stall.
I bought a GN 200r4 and it has a D5 converter with it. I dont think I can use it since my combo is 520hp/555 TQ. It is a street car that will get a few hard runs and maybe a trip or two down a track. If I can use it I would sell for $50 and I will be around Sycamore IL Saturday.
That's about the same hp/tq as my combo. My engine made 540hp/580 TQ on the dyno. My car will also be for street/highway driving with a few runs down the track to see what it can do. Just looking for a few opinions on what company makes the best 200r4 converters. PTC & Coan are the converters most have recommended so far.
Hi, i am looking also for a torque converter for a 200R4. Can somebody explain me what D5 stand for ? Stands D5 for a long word like "Street Fighter converter" or "Saturday Night Torque Master" ??? Does exist also D4 or D6 ? I have never heard about D5. Best Regards Michael from Willich in Germany
