Geez Marv what a great story. Mine a little odd also-1954 My uncle was the school driving instructor. He used a dual controls stick shift 1954 Mercury...
Neither could my buddy and he tried for years. 1975 Ford LTD wagon, and my wife too, but I think their families was a '77.
I got to use the driving schools car. A super sexy, chick getting super car............. 1987 Dodge Omni
Took my test in my Dads 1946 Buick Super Sedanette, standard shift, no power steering. I aced both written and driving and knew right then I was going to be a trucker!
1959, in mom's 1949 Buick Super sedanette, manual steering. Car was a real roach and the old guy (50?) giving the test wasn't happy from the start. No problem with the written part or parallel parking, but failed the rest because I "drove too aggressively"----guess he wasn't used to the acceleration of the mighty Dynaflow. Next time around, same car, different guy at the DMV, passed with no issues.
1957 I got to use the driving school car, some kind of chevy, was not too familiar with cars then, but my wife go to use my 62 Olds Starfire, black with red buckets.Got that in 62 just out of the Army. But my first car was a 1950 Buick Special, straight 8,with Dinaflow trans.Bruno.
Twas 1980 Ma's 1976 Ford Maverick 6cyl was the "test" vehicle. Took the test at the Registry in Epping NH , not far from New England Dragway. Bought 2 cars immediately after getting my license , a 1972 Olds Cutlass F85 and a 1971 Buick Electra. When the timing chain quit in the Electra and the 350 Rocket had had enough, I rebuilt the 455 and put it in the Cutlass. One of the fastest cars in my high school parking lot. 38 years later , I rebuilt it again and put it in my 70 Skylark. Jim....
...me too, mine was a convertible, X-member frame made pulling OD trans a bear. Lowered to ground front/rear with cut-down Merc skirts. So low had to exit gas station aprons at angle to keep from pulling exhaust tips off... ...notable feat...
We had a wagon like that but it was a Country Squire. I think that package is what gave it the fake wood grain panels down the side. Forgot all about that until I saw your pic!
1976 Plymouth Volare. The odd thing about that car is it had turn signal indicators mounted on the top of each fender facing back to the cabin. I guess it was so you could see if they were on or not, but had them in the dash as well. Anyway I distinctly remember it had a feature that the left indicator would glow when you were “wasting gas” it would get brighter the further you pushed the accelerator in relation to engine rpm and I remember being terrified the gal from the dmv would know what it was so I basically idled that thing around. Looking back there is no way some lady in 1992 would know anything about that old Plymouth. Ahh to be young again.
Drove home? Noooway! Too funny. What was the "big blow up" recipe? This is turning out to be a great thread and gave me an idea for another one.
