What Color should the oil dipstick tube on a 70 style tube be? Buick red, "natural" or something else?

    Thank you,

You can wait for a second opinion, but I'm 99.9% sure they were natural along with the dipstick, but you never see that.

I do not think so. Let's get Brad in here.

Uh...no...both parts were natural, despite what you see on cars or "restorers" do.

Thanks guys. The one I have has a dull red rubber coated handle and part # 1240523 on the dipstick. Of course no part # on the tube. It is going in a motor JW is building for me.

I clear Zinc plated mine. So it would look natural. Little over done though

That's a 1972-73 dipstick you have there Geoff. When I said I was 99.9% sure, I was talking about the tube. I'm 100% sure the dipstick was natural in 70. Both actually kind of look better in red, though.

Thank you Frank. JW is not building a "period correct" motor for me (my car is a 71), It just so happens that it is a 73 block. I think I'll paint it Buick red, especially since I have the paint and I'd have to buy high temp clear if I was to leave it natural.

I have never seen one with a red rubber coated look. Common sense says natural for all dipstick components or maybe plated? The engine was painted at the engine plant with a plug in the dip stick hole. It was delivered to Buick like that. Assbly line workers removed the plug and installed the dip stick parts so no reason they were painted.

Concerning the rubber coated handle, I bought it used from someone on the board (can't recall who), and that's the way it was when I got it. I appreciate all the responses.

Just like the engine plant, JW will send the completed motor to me with a plug in the dip stick hole.

The Red Rubber coating on the engine dipstick handle started about 1974/75 from the Factory.

The early sticks were natural, with the plastic "tip" at the end of the handle being red.
