What I have learned so far

    1) Don't unlock your old car and then try and open the door with your keys in the same hand. You will scratch it.

    2) Don't use your car as a shelf in your garage. If you need to store things, get a shelf. Don't pile stuff on your car. Why? See number 1)

    3) Don't stick a screwdriver in your back pocket and forget about it. You WILL poke a hole in the upholstery of the seat of your car. Note that I have not done 1), 2), or 3) myself but have seen it done.

    3) I hate the smell of mouse pee. Too many old cars smell like mouse pee.

    4) it's a miracle that anything with a carburetor runs at all. Take the lid off of your toilet and look inside the tank. That's basically how a carburetor works. Now imagine a toilet tank that is filled with a liquid that will turn to gunk if you don't use it often enough.

    5) I just parted out an air conditioning system on an old Buick. It's also a miracle that cars with A/C blew cold air when new. What a Rube Goldberg contraption! If you have a 50 year old car with functioning A/C you are doing something right, maybe you should play the lottery more.

    6) No, it's not a Chevelle, yes Buick made muscle cars.

May I add, "Just because a part is new, does not mean that it's good".

Don't let batteries in things you don't use often, they will leak and destroy the tools.

Very funny read, thanks. On the a.c. though, the old poa systems are capable of seriously cold output. My 67 will go down to 32 degrees without effort. Condensation forms on the vents and fog will occasionally come out. They are complicated though...

When at home don't set your credit card out in plain sight. Wife will use it to purchase ridiculous items, like food.

We measured the temperature coming out of the ducts of a '64 Chrysler with the huge Airtemp V2 compressor at 28 degrees!
BTW: I once read that by 1911 there was nothing that needed to be invented that would have prevented cars from having air conditioning then. It just didn't occur to car manufacturers to put AC into their cars until the 40s. I believe that Packard was the first.

I to think Packard was the first for AC and used Ammonia as the refrigerant.

Worked good until you got a leak.

I did number 3 (the first number 3 on your list about the screwdriver). Just reupholstered my front bench because of it. :( Not real proud of that one...

I have learned that if you lose something, then buy a new one, you will find the item that you lost. It works doggone near every time.
I have also learned that if you keep something for 10 years, then get rid of it, within a short period of time you will need it.

One more... Backing up with the door open will always catch something!

As smart as we are we still do those stupid things?

    Why?

I get a grin out of the expression, when you lose something, "It's always in the last place you look." Why would you continue?

Indeed, lost a clip and screw for trim on the way out the door to the hardware store. Needed screw to match up and get remaining screws I needed. Found it today after buying a complete set of hardware off the board, of course.
Wifey always ask me why I keep so much stuff. I tell her cuz I might need it, and often do....

So you could find another one !
Reminds me of things my dad would say,
Nuttin to it, just to do it.

R12 refrigerant is superior to 134a! My ac still worked in my GS since I bought the car in '87. Last year a good friend who is a meticulous master mechanic knows and works on my cars with me was able to recharge my system to optimize it. (We had a couple of cans of unused R12.). He explained that the molecules used in 134a are much smaller than those in R12 and can actually leak out over a period of years through the ac hoses. I understand that R12a is compatible with R12. If you are thinking of converting to R134a, I would try the 12a first!

The key when recharging the systems is to make sure you add a can of refigerant oil to keep the system lubricated and run the system periodically. The problem I now have is that the switch is starting to go bad. It takes several times to get the compressor to turn on.

My fav, when the aftermarket say it's "bolt on" the are lying !! You will have to modify or fab something to get it to "bolt on"

The proof of the top line - During our move south, I carefully packed my little squirt oil can in a plastic bag and put it in a shipping box. The Model T requires the oiling of several items on a regular basis. I couldn't find the damn thing, and finally went out and bought another that was bigger and clunkier, but did work. You guessed it - This morning I found the one that I packed.
