As the title says. Instead of combing through factory literature to find the best 1/4 combo, do it to build the highest top speed. I know it’d be prohibitively dangerous, but what combos would do well and what would speeds would be the result? (The thread about aerodynamics sparked this). Patrick
Seems at one time i read that the 66 Hemi Satellite with factory 3.23 gears was highest top speed factory car of the muscle era. Can't imagine finding a place for that to slow down with 4 wheel drums! Nevermind it was aerodynamic as a brick.
Try a 1969 Wildcat with a 2.45 axle (the only year offered) with a 1970 Stage 1 455. Calculated top speed at 4200 rpm was 140 mph. Hairiest ride of my life when I flew over a crowned intersection and caught air at that speed. The altitude achieved was probably inches, but it felt like 1000 feet. To this day I don't know how I was able to hang on to and stop that car. It was a straight and fairly wide road (luckily) and the exercise cost me a brand new set of shocks, new front shoes and one drum, along with a motor mount that snapped. Knees were knocking and certain orifices were puckering on that little adventure. Got out of the car, puked, and had another beer. (23 years old and stupid...'nuff said). I never did it again.
I'd have to believe the the big winged roadrunners/Daytona's would be hard to beat with those pointy noses. I would suspect the Torino talledegas would do well also since they were made to campaign Nascar super speedways.
I recall reading an article 10-15 years ago about a guy in Europe who built his GS455 to do just that....top end. I'll try and find it.
What if, like FAST, the build combo had to be factory available? Could you order a Hemi Superbird with 2 series gears? Boss 9? Stage 1? Dual quad Riviera? Something high winding like a Boss 302, Z28 or L79?
What Shawn said. Winged cars and Charger 500's and the like. But think how fun it could be with quarter mile times out of the equation. You could start entering in heavily modified big block station wagons with 2:56 gears etc. Who wouldn't wanna see a 73 Estate Wagon with Stage 2 heads making a 140mph run. Unless there's a wheel base limit.
easy , just make a minimum production number . high enough to keep out the aero cars but low enough to include the basic hemi , 429 , rat etc cars . or have a couple dif classes - aero , limited production ( maybe to include dealer installed options like stage 2 ) and standard production line . body templates would probably be needed after awhile .
At this stage in life I really don't care about top speed. It's off the line torque that makes me happy
