What Paint?

How do you guys paint your model cars so well? Last time i did a model i was like 14 and i used the little brushes and never made it turn out real spectacular. Do they have a way to spray the paint on?

I use automotive paint (base coat) and i use acrylic spray can clear coat,you can have the paint shop mix your paint and put it in a spray can, or you can buy a spray can of compressed air that a cup attaches to the bottom so you can mix any color and you can reuse the air can til you run out of air Laters Tim:3gears:

 

Is that expensive to take it somewhere to get the paint like that? I'd like to keep the model building rather inexpensive. :laugh:

I also use automotive paints and clears but if you do not have that availability you can go to your local autoparts store and get duplicolor cans of just about any car color out there. here's a couple I've done the Honda is finished in Duplicolor gold with glasurit clear. The wagon and GTO are Duplicolor base coat weathered. The GTO isn't finished.

Thanks, i'll have to check around. I dont really have any stores like that around. That i know of anyway... Closest store that i would think might possibly have anything like it is the Michaels arts and crafts place. I'll look around.

By the way guys, i just bought a model v-8 online! 300+ pieces and about 12" long. it's a 1/4 scale model. I cant wait to get it in the mail! (I had just started a different thread about it then decided to buy it anyway. :laugh: :laugh: )

I bought some testors paints today, just the regular little jars, and a container of metallic silver for the '66 Riv im building. I painted the riv with the silver and that paint works amazing!!! It looks so smooth and lays really nicely! Now, i was wondering... I saw they had clear flat. Do they make a clear coat that isnt flat? i want a shiny finish if possible, although the flat metallic silver looks awesome as is. Maybe they just didnt have the clear gloss in stock at the time.

Yes they make a gloss clear. Just be sure you are using enamels or lacquers.
A hobby shop should have any thing you need.

I use an air brush and have my local auto paint store mix up touchup bottles of orig. colors. most in the $6.00 to 8.00 range.

unfortunately i dont know of any hobby shops around here. the only store i have is a major art store that only has a handful of testors paints, well any model paints for that matter, and a few models.

After i finish my riv model, i want to move onto a '70 gsx.

Can anyone give me any tips on putting those darn stickers on? after i dip them in water they always rip when i try to attach them.

Jason, the decals need to be in the water until they start to peel up from the paper usually about 3-5 min. If you apply very very little pressure to the decal and it dosen't look like its going to slide, put it back in the water.
As far as the model paint, you can put enamel over laquer but not laquer over enamel, sometimes. It depends on which formula, acrylic enamel, etc. But the best choice as with everyone in our local model car club is Dupli-color, and tamiya. Tamiya clear is awsome, but you can get by with dupli-color. I personally don't like testors due to its to thick and shadows around body lines bad. Dupli-color lays out like basecoat and covers great. hundreds of colors to choose from and can usually be found at your local auto parts store autozone, oreilys, advanced, meijers, etc.

 

Thanks for the info. I'll look around for that clear. I do like the way the car looks though being flat silver metallic, so i may just keep it that way. i painted it and it turned out really good, so i dont want to risk making it look bad. haha.

One thing i noticed though is that near the bottom of the car the paint looks like there are a few dark splotches. Not really noticable unless you are actually looking for it, but it would still be nice without that. Is that what you meant when you said it shadows?
