I'm looking at making the GS more of a cruiser and to take some corners better, so what size tire would you run on the front and back with these 17" wheels on a 70 GS? I don't want that 1" sidewall look, but I don't want tires too tall either. http://www.jegs.com/i/American-Racing /286/50178012500/10002/-1?parentProductId=3621574
Craig, the side walls need to be shorter with bigger rims, to maintain the overall height of the tire/wheel. A P245/50R-17 is 26.64" tall. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...h=255/&rearRatio=40&rearDiameter=17&zip-code= The wider you go, the lower the aspect ratio has to be because the sidewall is a percentage of the section width.
This is what I put on my '65. There is some rubber showing, not all wheel. There is a thread in this section, even though it's not a 70 you can see the tire look. Good luck! Front 215-55-17; rear 235-60-17 Coopers.
FWIW, I run Dunlop SP Sport 5000 in P275/55R17 on my '71 Riv's custom-made, Buick wheels. Same height tire as a P235/75R15. Granted, I've got a big wheel opening to fill, but they look and fit just right. Verified with GPS and speedo is dead-on accurate fro 0-120.
Very nice looking wheels you've selected. I went with similar wheels from US Mags in the same size, and installed 235/55R17 tires, BFG g-force sport comp-2. I went with this tire size for several reasons, first it matches the original diameter and circumference of the stock wheel/tire combo, second, the proportions look right (not too much wheel, or too little sidewall), third, there are quite a few performance tire options out there in this size. It is not the biggest, fattest tire I could put on, but it sure was a huge handling and ride upgrade from what was on the car when I bought it last November.
Thanks. I built those wheels actually, none others in existence. The center section is the correct, original Buick (5on5 BC) Road Wheel mounted in an aftermarket 17" chrome rim.
A lot of work. They'd be pricey. Not sure if I'd want to devote the time, unless I was to make five or more sets, and even then doubtful.:idea2:o No:
