    tubecatgs Finally a 4 speed......

For a 72 Skylark that had a 350 and converting to a 455... I would need a short nose (not a long nose) water pump correct? thanks

Doesn’t matter as long as you have the compatible pulleys so the belts line up.

Larry, What about fan within shroud for each pump length? Do you know why they changed to a longer pump? Just curious.

Not sure that was ever a concern back in the day

    Don't know.

Big car pumps vs small car pumps?

Some 72 GS cars had the long pump, my 70 has a short pump. Not sure there is any rhyme or reason. Here is the applications from the TA catalog,

Thanks. I saw that.... so next question... if the motor came out of a 72 Riv (full size car? That probably has a long pump) and i had all the original 455 Riv brackets and accessories and belts... should i reuse all of them and the long pump for my 72 Skylark convertible? Or should i go with a short pump and only need to get a short pump pulley or would i need ALL new pulleys? Thanks

I would use what you have for a 72 Skylark unless you want to make extra work for yourself. If you are going to use a 70 fan shroud, the short pump might be better.

Do you have a shroud yet?

No shroud yet. Its just a decent driver and not all original so i am keeping an eye out for any 455 shroud not too picky on being correct for the year.

    I'd look for a '72.

whats the difference between 70,71 and 72 455 shrouds? besides maybe a radiator hose support hole/bracket on top?

The 70 shroud has a 20” opening, 71-2 shrouds are the same for all intents and purposes, but the opening is 22”. The 18” fan fits great in the 70 shroud but gets lost in the 71-2 shroud, use the 5 blade 20” fan for them.

For the most cooling get a 19.5" 7-blade GM fan as installed on other cars for the 22" shroud
