With air bags and slicks you can almost negate the need for a posi. Mine is failing and the car ran low 13s. Patrick
The most important part of the quarter mile is the first 60 feet. Trying to launch a healthy BBB on one tire is an exercise in FUTILITY.
Yeah I think your rite Larry. Probably launch at 2000 rpm. Run 1 slick on drive wheele. Although with a rochester you can delay the secondary air valve(tension spring on buterflys) just rite and never break loose. Launch with just enough rpm to load the suspension and off you go. Thats what Gesslers runs look like.
I ran 13.08 with 2.56 open rear and 26in slicks and 18lbs of air in right bag. Did burnout and right would spin then since it was sticky the second burnout would spin drivers side. Then pulled to line and off it went...….Got some strange looks.... I tried ONE slick and it totally smoked the driver's side leaving the starting line.....
So Anson, have you ever had your car down the track, or are you a virgin? Also, do you have Drag Radials?
Im a virgen on a track. But I have raced friends on some of the long industrial roads in Hayward. Basically whoever did not spin the tires would win. I have a 3.08 one legger. TA Radials bf goodrich factory rallys. 700r4 tranny.
I originally had a goal of 12 sec 1/4 mile. I built a 455 kB c18 cam ported iron stg 2 valves. Then learned better porting technique on another set of heads got TA valves and TA a little bigger cam. And gradually added on better parts until I broke a factory connecting freeway racing.
I would love to get a posi carrier for my Riviera GS. Zero after market . cant even get a TA rearend cover/ gurdle from TA perf.
Horsepower number is just a number. It has little to do with a 12 sec quarter mile run. For a Buick the # 600 hp is the point ware you need dollars , machine work , bottom end support. So my current motor is aimed at not quite hitting 600. Thats the motor with no car attached. One thing intersting about mating a 700r4 is the adapter plate is 1/2 steel. So its like a rear mid plate. It migjt have some stregnthing effect.
That would be funny f___ked up pulling up to do my tire warming burn out and the wrong wheele spun. But that would be the correct wheele. I have to thank You BQuick for saving me from that expiearance
I watched Ken Mild pull down high 12's on an open diff in his 69 GS during a FAST/Musclepalooza at LVD, that the fastest I've seen. But Larry's right, a well set up car with air bags will launch on one wheel pretty well, up to a certain torque level. My 65 started on an open 3.08 before I did any tuning when I first bought it. it would 60ft in the 2.3-2.4 range. One of the first changes I made was a 3.23 posi and didnt see any significant improvements, just more consistency.
Don't even bother going to the track without sticky tires. It will be a frustrating experience trying to launch your car at all, especially with one tire. Again, the most important part of the 1/4 mile is the first 60'. You need a sub 2 second short time.
https://www.powertrax.com/product-info/lock-right-locker-traction-system/ If they make one to fit, its not as nice as a good LSD, but it's tough and inexpensive. It's easy to install in about 2hrs. at home with little skills involved. You will never spin one wheel again.
I checked. They dont show any yr Riviera. Looks decent though. In SAC I think the closest track is in Nevada maby.
