I put relined drums on my car a few months ago with wheel bearings and all the rest. After a few weeks the right wheel was a bit loose so I retightened the bearing. Then the left was loose a few weeks later. Now today both were loose. I loosened and then retightened the bearings. Anybody ever see anything like this? I noticed also that the drum is slightly loose on the lugs. Not loose like it would be the issue but like someone tried to knock the hub out? When the wheel is on it is fine. If it happens again I will get new bearings and check the spindles, bit they seemed fine. Thanks.
Never saw anything like that. Once the castle nut is tightened correctly, the bearings stay the way they are. Did you replace the races? Maybe they weren't pressed in all the way? As far as the drum, I take it the rivets are loose? If it really bothers you, you can send them to JG Relining. They can re-rivet them. How oversize are they? Did you ever micrometer them? They can cut the old liners out of your aluminum drums and installed new ones essentially re-sizing them back to 9 1/2"
Is it a Skylark or GS? What year? The reason I ask is, for a few years the stud and hole in the drum it passed through were larger on a GS than a 'lark. Apparently the hubs were different. Maybe your parts got musmatched? Patrick
It's a 70 gs. The drums were from another gs and I had jg relining do them. I will check the races and the bearings. The center hub seems good just the drum can slightly move on the hub until the wheel is on.
John. As for the drums being a little loose on the hubs it wont matter because the Lug nuts will pull everything together. That should have nothing to do with the wheel bearings. I would go with the races not being seated .
I'd like to say something, but it won't be nice. Chinese CRAP!!! I put new bearings on my utility trailer with the new races. I have re-tightened them 4 times. Turns out the inner race on the bearing itself must not have been QUALITY hardened steel. They wiggle on the spindle. (They were fine when I installed them a year ago!) I am tired of chinese garbage. Just my 2 cents.
Quite possible. The guy who relined the drums put the races and the bearings in. Maybe I will change them. I have a set in my spare parts.
Well I took the bearings out and found the inner right had some metal in the grease. The races looked ok and the bearing also. It was magnetic so I guess from the bearing. I replaced with some SKF bearings and they seem fine after some miles. The old bearings were made in China National bearings. I thought they were at least made in North America. BTW, I used a bearing packing tool for the first time and it is nice not to have a globby mess on your hands or gloves. I think I will use it again in the future.

I was just going to say the same thing, I've seen "Real Cheap Bearing" do that... I only use a good name company bearings... I buy my stuff at NAPA and I always use the Gold Line...
Just replaced front bearings on my '96 Chevy pu with SKF bearings from NAPA that are made in China. Told the guy don't want Chinese he said that's all you're going to find.
The ones I got were not made in China. It is terrible that this is the norm. I had a heck of a time finding them. It is amazing that bearings made 40-50 years ago are superior to one's made now with the technology.
The ones we always use and are Timken Set6 LM67010 + LM67048 inner & Timken Set2 LM11910 + Lm11949 outer. These are or were Made In USA. Never a problem. Got this set from Rockauto for very good price. I hope they still make them here. Matt
Well, the second part isn't exactly true. If I walked over to the bearing shelves at work and looked at the boxes I can tell you I'd find bearings from all over. China, Taiwan, Korea, Germany, Poland, USA, Mexico, Japan, etc., all of them are SKF. When buying any SKF bearings, look at the part number tag. They're all marked where they're made.
Timken bearings are made in 29 different countries according to their website. The ones they offer for our A-bodies are or were USA
I just replaced the hub bearing in my 98 Riviera. The ABS light was on because the sensor was shot, it is integral with the bearing. Ordered 2 Timken bearings from Rockauto. One was made in U.S.A. The other in South Korea.
Well, a few hundred more miles and the bearings are still good. More proof that it was the bearings that were made in China (National).
