I am looking to change jobs. According to jobs reports for state of MN, there are about 100,000 job openings that are not retail, fast food, or restaurant. Even the news reports that there is a shortage of skilled workers out there.

So...I'm a skilled worker that has applied to a number of companies. And all I get is "Thanks for interest, at this time we are moving on with other candidates." I'm confused...a little help here??

Nothing personal (of course), but have you taken a good look at your resume? Your cover letter style? Re-evaluated how you reach out? If you're getting replies (which is better than no response), that means they are seeing what you sent... so perhaps you need to give everything a once-over or a fresh look.

    Good luck!

I feel the same way. After 15 years, my job was off-shored. It took months to find another job. I live in a small area in Central Illinois, so not much here anyway.

I kept hearing over and over and over that I was over-qualified. I was getting ready to dumb-down my Resume, but found a job.

Pretty sad when one has too many qualifications, and too much experience.

Feedback after interviews was interesting at times:

People felt threatened by my experience, and felt I would advance before they would.
Too much experience, and will demand too much money.
'Has more experience than our upper management'

It's crazy out there in the job market!

    Good Luck to you!

Seems to me most of the job boom is entry level work or just above. Everything being built around here is some awful chain restaurant or a gas station/mini mart. This is simply my observation.

I work as a technical recruiter for a National IT company. We hire approximately 60,000 contractors year over year. I look at anywhere from 50-100 resumes a day and would be happy to review yours and offer any suggestions if needed.

    Good question,

I too have been between positions, for a while now almost considering the out of state contract gigs, what I had to do during the great recession.

Companies don't seem to want to pay much for any experience, my wages have been stagnant since 09. Even appling to jobs with the same pay is feeling like a road block.

Another roadblock companies now all want a Bachelor's degree yet don't pay near what I made at my last position

I don't see the opportunities either, but I do know why the unemployment figures are so low at least in Michigan, after you use up your benefits you can no longer file your status as unemployed. I bet other states are doing this as well, so politicians can all claim things are great.

Hope you find what you're looking for at ththnext job and it happens for you sooner than later.

    Cheers,

You are too old. They know that. I am too.
GM just let 1000's of older engineers go claiming their experience was no longer relevant.

^^^^^,They want younger personal so they can train them as they want and not have an "experienced" employee them their way is wrong,..or at least that's what we are told by our local industries in vocational field. Their bean counters say younger employees are more motivated with less attachments etc

I retired in June and have been too busy to look for another real job BUT, there seems to be a bunch of $12/hr jobs out there. A guy starting out could not do much with that.

Update your resume. Look at websites like indeed or CareerBuilder....

Age depends on that trade or the company. My wife is 55 she just got hired in the area of she excels at. Back to six digit income again

I got a lot of that also when I was looking. Too old, over qualified, no degree. I had to look in a different direction and I found work. After a few years I found a job in my field.
Resume bots look for certain key words and phrases. If those are not there you get passed by. Try Linked In. I posted my resume on there 7 or 8 years ago and this year I have received
more notifications that in the past years. The jobs are out there. Patience and perseverance pays off. Best of luck.

Lots of work in Oil Fields. SE New Mexico. Usually the Welders, pipe fitters, and truck drivers (CDL) are the ones making the real money. Work in geo-technical and the las Cruces based company I work for is having an extremely hard time finding anyone willing to travel weekly out here. In a company truck, travel time is paid time. Hotel (la Quinta) and food is paid for. Most want to stay in the protective cocoon of home. Las Cruces job market is terrible. Mostly government (where you need a connection) or lower paid retail, restaurant and other service type jobs.

I can tell you if you are skilled in the building trades there is work out there but it won't be in your backyard. Last year when I re-entered the workforce I was saddened at the lack of qualified tig welders and pipefitters.

Unfortunately many observations on this post are true. There are many, many jobs but few that pay anything decent unless you have an inside advantage or are in the medical profession so most are working two or three jobs. We have had three vacancies for a skilled HVAC position in the hospital since January but they only want to pay $18-$20/hour starting. That is not gonna lure knowledgeable/experienced people away from the construction trades so they go unfilled because we get unqualified applicants that the hospital is not willing to train because they move on after 2-3 years to better pay or they are my age with the last applicant being 71 years old. What I just can't understand is why... Because we are so shirt staffed we are using contractors to do PM's and small repairs charging $125+/hr. Go figure.

But, graduate with a degree in computer science and get hired immediately by our IT dept making $55K/year plus 30 days paid vac/year and 6 hours of sick time accrued every 80 hours worked plus med and 401 benefits.

I'd stay away from the "home improvement" big boxes. All too easy, to get taken advantage of if you actually show up, and work in high labor departments. Which do not have a pay differential. Meanwhile favorites do very little, but get promoted. Their business model makes no sense to me.
