Will changing to the 3.42 over my 3.08 make a noticeable difference?

Or would it be wise to spend my $$ elsewhere??

Make a difference where? Street? Strip? Highway? I've read many recommendations for 3.08's as a great all around gear ratio.

I thought about doing this change myself. I have 355's with only 26 in tall tires. Makes a noisy highway drive.

going from 3.08s to 3.42s will be a noticeable difference.

Around town, the motor will rev higher, and on the hiway it will be especially noticeable.

The rear tires will break loose easier with 3.42s from a stop.

Do you have any sort of a cam in your motor?

Strictly around town, it's never been to the strip...

Bone stock, it's on the "List" as well.

You will definitely notice a difference in the "feel" of the car. First gear will feel much quicker. Highway travel will have a noticeable difference in RPM. However your time slip will probably only be about 0.1 better (which is why I stick with tall gears) since you are in second gear so much sooner.

I have a nicely built 455 in my Riv and the 3.08 gear is great to have around town as well as on the highway. So, for now, my 3.42 is still sitting in a box.

I know 3.08's are considered "highway" gears, but after driving modern cars with OD transmissions, my 455 4 speed '70 gs sounds like its reving pretty high with 3.08's. I can't imagine interstate speeds with anything lower. Scott

I love my 3.08's and will never go back to 3:64's except if I sell the car (GSX) Stage 1

    I went from 2.41s to 3.08s.. I'm into the 13's on the track (stock 70 455, a stock turbo 350 & 26" tires) and I get 18mpg over the highway.. I feel it's just right for a "driver".

i guess the difference in those would be in highway use, hows your setup running on the street and highway..

I have a 200 trans so I can cruise 80-90 MPH on the interstate no sweat, but I usually go 70. Works great on the street around town.

my buddy runs 3.55s , he used a full tank of fuel getting to the track & back, he could not go over 60mph without it driving him nuts. I burned just over 1/4 tank and could have pushed it way harder....

I have owned Riveras with and without the 3.42. I'll take the stock 3:07 any day but most of my driving is highway. 3.42 is better for quicker launches around town but suck for average driving encountered while going to various car functions. So it just depends on what you want. You will notice a difference thats for sure.

You will see about 10% difference in the final gear, so gas will see a big difference.
