Does anyone know if the windshield wiper cover ( on the cowl ) is the same for 68-69 Skylark's as the 70-72 ones ?
I've seen a few different types used in different yrs. It is the horizontal covering that goes over the moving arms that connect the wiper motor to the wiper arms. It attaches just below the windshield base metal moulding with small screws that attach to the cowl .
At least for 69-72 there were 2 different types, One type for cars with recessed wipers and one for cars with non-recessed wipers. The non-recessed wiper version is much thinner then the other, and is often found on 2 and 4 door sedans, etc. I believe the 68's follow this same thing, but you would need to check. It would make this a lot easier if you stated which year car you have, and the type of wiper motor you are using.. Duane
OK, Forget about everything I posted earlier, I thought you were talking about the chromed steel piece at the bottom of the windshield. Yes, that should be the same for all 68 thru mid production of 72 Buick A-bodies. The later 72 cars used a 3-piece plastic set up Also, these are Buick only, other brands either cut them differently or they were contoured differently. Duane
I guess I do have the correct one, just a little weathered after 50 yrs. ANYONE make them repro , or have to give my exsisting one some TLC
Thanks for the info Duane. My friend sent me a pict from his Ames Pontiac catalogue showing a cowl screen cover for the 68 GTO/Lemans & it looks very similar. Possible the other A body siblings might share the same part ? Might get lucky keep you posted.
Of course they all look similar (the cowl screens).....the cowl tops are all the same across the various Abody cars. BUT....the Buick is unique as it has a raised ridge running down one of the long sides (the long side closest to the windshield). No other Abody had that same feature. That is the feature that is unique but nobody seems to point out. I'm not sure when Buick began incorporating this "ridge" in the cowl screen but I can tell you 100% that Olds, for example, DID NOT have the ridge in theirs. Seems to be unique and that's why they are so hard to find. EDIT AND ADD: Just went out and looked at one of my '70 Olds cowl screens and compared a couple more loose screens to a Buick screen. The Olds screen (and likely others) does not run OVER that "ridge" in the top of the cowl. That edge rests on top of the ridge but does not run closer to the windshield where the Buick incorporates the "H" clips. Buicks were bought by people in leafy suburbs who drove to leafy golf courses. They were apparently concerned about leaves getting into the smaller square holes that the Buick screen covers (along the "H" clip area). All other GM Abody owners lived in barren wastelands where there were no leaves......thus, no need to cover up those square openings.
The Buick ones are all by themselves, with the ridge that Patton talked about and the holes they have punched into them for the clips etc. The Oldsmobile ones are also unique. I don't know what Pontiac used but I believe they are different as well, and Chevy didn't use anything. So again the Buick ones are unique and are not reproduced "correctly". Some people will say they sell them, but they are not right. Duane
