I have bought a car but it had a dash fire (garage caught on fire and eventually the dash did), wiring and everything associated with the dash is toast. The engine was unharmed. I want to crank it up to see what condition the engine is in; it does run, the previous owner sent me a video of the engine running. Whatever wiring he did is gone.

I have the wire from the solenoid (S side) and can touch it to to the battery and the engine will turn over. Only other wire on the starter/solenoid is the hot wire from the battery.

Any suggestions on what I need to do to put power to the coil, it still has a points set up.

If you just want to hear it run, put a 12v wire to the coil and you can either leave it loose and pull power to make it die or have an on/off switch wired in line to kill it.

Put a resistor in-line or else the points will burn out fairly quickly from a full 12 volts.

Any recommendations on what size wire to use and what resistor to purchase?
