Looking for a decent hood ornament, one that still has pretty good paint and shine to it. Mine is decent but the paint is kinda thin on the front and gone on the backside. Would be willing to swap mine and some cash if you've got a nice one.

You're pretty much describing a '65 hood ornament.

Do you know if the backsides came with paint on them? Are you saying there's no hope to get a real nice one??

Desperately need a reproduction. (Re: WTD: 1965 Sportwagoon hood ornament)

Dear doogie, la 65 gs, and 1965 V-8 Buick fans,

Alas, they are - very - hard to come by looking nice. You can repaint them using hobby paints and the effect is nice, but the missing chrome is more of a problem. I tried to nudge OPGI to consider hunting down the old molds for the Poston reproduction 1965 hood ornament. Perhaps we should all make a plug for that . . . . the need is indeed - desperate!!

    Cheers, Edouard :beer

The front and back are suppose to look the same.
Not saying "no hope", just saying a nice one is hard to find.

The Poston reproduction was..... let's say lacking in quality.

There were reproduced replacement foil shield pieces made also about 20 years ago.

maybe OPGI would consider doing a reproduction if they had some bonafide preorders to justify the expense. I might just contact them to see what it would take for them to get involved in such an undertaking.

Desperate need - is there a mold? (Re: WTD: 1965 Sportwagoon hood ornament)

Dear doogie, Loren, and fans of the 1965 Buick A-bodies,

I've been keeping an eye on what these hood ornaments have been selling for and there was a used hood ornament that sold for $410 on eBay in April 2014. So the desperation is genuine. I picked up a Poston reproduction on eBay a few years back and it is perfectly acceptable for a nice looking daily-driver, but it definitely isn't show quality as Loren point out.

I wanted to start a thread on 65GS.com to see what those guys are doing as far as hood ornaments. That forum is where the serious 1965 GS restorers hang-out so I would like to hear their opinions. When I get around to doing that I'll provide a pointer on this thread. I don't know if there is enough interest to have a production run made. It might be easier to simple get the hood ornaments and have us paint them. Painting is very labor intensive and I don't know if anybody would willing to pay what it would cost to make them and have them painted by hand.

I think the key problem would be if there is a mold for this ornament. I don't know what happened to the GM molds. I thought OPGI was formed by someone who had gotten his hands on the molds of GM parts and that was basis of the company. I'm not sure this is correct however. If the original hood ornament mold survived, that might cause sufficient interest. I don't know if there is enough interest in having the Poston ornaments reproduced once more.

    Cheers, Edouard

eBay ornament is a Poston (Re: WTD: 1965 Sportwagoon hood ornament)

Dear Jeff, doogie, Loren, and fans of the 1965 Buick A-bodies,

Sure looks to me like that hood ornament is the Poston reproduction, not a original Buick ornament. If that seller does manage to get more than $300 that will indicate the level of desperation of folks trying to get this part.

    Cheers, Edouard

I have bought several items from this seller. He is an honest guy and great to do business with. From my experiences with him, I would believe it is an original if he claims it is. Just my 2 cents.

    It's real.

Poston ornaments are smooth on the outside. OEM has a ridge along the center of the outside.
Poston has crappy paper foil decals with poor detail. OEM tri-shield is metal and highly detailed.

eBay ornament is a Poston (Re: WTD: 1965 Sportwagoon hood ornament)

Dear Jeff, Michael, and V-8 Buick hood ornament experts,

Beg to differ, but I have high resolution comparison photos of the Poston and the OEM Buick ornament. Here is the front view:

    Here is the back view:

Compare these photos to the eBay photos and you'll see my point of view. The clincher is that the wedge that goes in between the underside of the hood and the emblem nut isn't the Buick design, but is a cheaper design that came with the Poston reproduction.

Beg all you want... but it's still the real deal :TU:

From your own photos, look at the outer edge of the left faded original ornament to see the ridge I'm talking about. The outer edge on the poston ornament is smooth. Also from your own photos, look at the trishields and notice the crispness of detail and continuity of shield lines on the faded original compared to the poston sticker. Also from your photos, look at the extra flashing holding the poston trishield in place.

    Now look at eBay again.

Very likely the real deal. Looks like some repainted the emblem. Notice the only color missing is the center shield. It makes it look like the crappy replacement stickers.

I talked to the seller, he says it is 100% OEM. That's good enough for me!

At what time? (Re: WTD: 1965 Sportwagoon hood ornament)

Dear Michael and mid-60s Buick fans,

Well at 3:37 pm PDT I got an email from the same person (because I'm buying some windshield washer nozzles from him) that can be read to say precisely the opposite. When did you get this email?

    Edouard,
I got an email from him at 5:36 pm mountain time stating "It is 100% OEM" . As I stated earlier, I trust this seller and his word is good in my book.

If you look at your pics of OEM and Poston and compare to the ebay listing, it is very plain his matches your OEM. The Poston does not match either one. The seller did say that the spacer that goes under the hood is repop and nut is not original but looks correct. I don't know what else can be said.

The 1965 hood ornament is my eBay auction. It IS 100% OEM and very nice, it is not a repop. As my description reads there is one little spot on the lower edge of the blue shield, may be a casting flaw or slight pit, can't say for sure. It did not come with a speed nut but I found one to include that looks correct I also included a spacer that I got a few of off of eBay awhile ago.
