I think... the service manual is vague, at best, regarding that seal and the lubricant that should be used. All the distributers I've taken apart have had that area under the seal caked with hardened cheap grease. I think the way it is supposed to work is that the grease would melt if the bearing got hot enough to melt it and a little bit of melted grease would seep into the hole at the bottom of the resevoir(sp) and film between the shaft and the housing and save the day. They were highly suggestive of replacing with new
