I jusy bought 2 Moser axles, c-clip eliminators and new studs from summit.

29 dollars for 2-day air shipping UPS!!!

Summit and Jegs are about the best when it comes to shipping prices. :TU:

Poston Buick is no better than the rest as far as shipping is concerned.
I recently bought a reproduction package tray for the 67 GS. $29.00 I thought was a good deal until they added the shipping. :af: $32.75! :af:
The package was 6 lb. I questioned them on this and they politely explained that the package was UPS oversize. I thought the box was about twice as wide as it needed to be, but about the proper length. I dont know what UPS limit is on length, but $32.75 to ship a 29 dollar part is a bit excessive. Oh well, too late now and the new package tray looks real sweet. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet!

I think a Package tray box is Oversize II, if you ship it by UPs and I think it goes as a 70 Lb box minumum, regardless of it's actual weight. That means if it weighs 1 Lb or 70, UPS charges the shipper the same price. That's why I always bought the mesh ones by the dozen, when I had my upholstery business. The shipping costs were almost the same.

I know when I ship front spoilers, if I go to the UPS customer counter, (because I ship only on occasion and no longer have my own account) that my cost is somewhere between $35.00-$45.00 for each box, plus the cost of the box, and getting it ready to ship, and taking it to UPS. That's why I ship in batches, because I am too small of a company to get a discount, and need to minimize my costs as best as I can.

My spoiler boxes need to be 72 " in the long dimension, so I get hit with gas surcharges, etc. because they need to develop so much money for each truck load. The sad thing is I can ship 2 spoilers for the same price as 1.
Their rules not mine, and here is another thing to think about, as the price of gas goes up, so will the shipping costs.

Many Guys have me deliver their parts to the shows, to do away with shipping costs. It's a lot cheaper for both me and them.

    s/h prices

My take on this matter is: The s/h prices have to be included in your purchase thoughts prior to buying the item...I am in GA, and an item that I need is in SC, even though its only 100 miles away, if the part I need is 5 bucks at the place of origin and 15.00 for s/h It comes to $20 for a $5.00 part...I cant drive 200 miles and waste 3 hours of my time for $15.00...So I just suck it up and drive on...Let them pay $3.00 a gallon and spend their time to deliver it to my front door...I do agree however that there is a ton of overhead at some of these companies so Inturn, there will be a ton of handling to compensate for it...I mean sometimes on ebay you see free shipping and free handling but the item is marked up 500%...I mean any way you look at it stuff is based on supply and demand...People must be paying it, or the companies would be closed up... :Dou: Don't get me wrong It makes me mad too, but there is nothing I can do About it...Especially if I need the part.

Hi, I just bought some motor mounts and gasket set from poston, was about 12 bucks shipping ground. At first they had overnight air shipping selected. Glad I caught it since that was about 75 bucks.

Thought I would throw this out there again . TA charged me 32.00 to ship hedder gaskets . Could have gone USPS for 1.25 . They said they cannot go that way . USPS will pick up packages for anyone and is much cheaper . I fell for the package tray fiasco also . I like to pick up parts at BG when possible ( Duane) But Year one doesn't think enough of the GS NATS to come up there . I will get my parts from TPP if possible .

    John,
I hear ya about shipping costs, and agree that it is a tough pill to swallow. I used to cringe every month when I had to write the check to UPS for shipping my upholstery sets all over the country.

I can also tell you why most of the large vendors don't go to the shows, or if they do go, only display their products and hand out catalogues and do not take orders.

I used to do 43 car shows a year and forget the year it started, but I believe it was Charlotte in 87. The IRS went around to all the large vendors and demanded they start charging sales tax. They said that by setting up at a show, they were "opening up a store" in that state, and that from then on any sales to that state, whether it was thru mail order or at a show, was not sales tax exempt and had to be reported and sent in to that state. They were trying to go after mail order businesses to tax them.

I can tell you that overnight, many other states jumped on the bandwagon, and many of the big venders either cancelled their show schedules entirely or just put out catalogues. Because they could not afford to have their entire sales to a state taxed, especially when other mail order vendors, that did not go to the shows, would still be tax exempt.

The only thing this did was force the major vendors to "ship" more parts instead of selling them at the shows. The guys ended up paying more for the parts (no show discounts) plus paying shipping, and boy were they unhappy. That's why some of the large vendors offer volume discounts, to compensate for shipping costs.

Thought I would throw this little known piece of "Car Show Vendor" history out there, so if you ever wanted to know why some of the big guys don't go to Carlisle........

That really blows about the shipping costs for something small.

On a side note though, I placed my first order ever from Summit on Wednesday. I ordered the American Thunder exhaust system and they shipped it for free. They did charge the $9.50 "Handling fee", but for something that weighs around 80 pounds, that was cool with me. It was shipped regular old ground shipment through UPS, and I ordered it late in the day (around 3:00) on Wednesday afternoon. I get home last night (Thursday) and my shipment is sitting at my door!! :bglasses: I basically got overnight shipment, for free. I'll definitely be doing more business with them!!

I also ordered an inner fender patch panel from YO, last Monday and it was sitting at my door in Michigan, on Wednesday, and I think the shipping was around $15.00.

    Good experiences, with both places!!

Yes OPG is terrible about this shipping thing too.I will not usual even order from them and its really a mute point to try to order from OPG because they can never ever fill a order at one time without having to backorder most of the parts. You are lucky to order one part and expect them to have it in stock. In my opinion there needs to be a better retailer with much better shipping policies,it is rediculous to need a 4.00 sticker and cost you 3 times the selling price to get it to you when it can be thrown in a envelope and shipped for 37 cents.

I think the next time I need something I'm going to try Ground Up. I know they are Chevelle and Camaro suppliers, but there are quite a few parts that Buicks share with the other a-bodies.

About 3 years ago, J.C. Whitney had Royal Purple motor oil on sale for $2.99 a quart, at the same time they had free shipping on all orders over $200.00!
Since I use 10-30 Royal Purple in both my Buicks and it costs $5.99 a quart here on Long Island at S&K Speed Shop plus 8 3/4% sales tax, Thats about $6.50 a quart.
I called thier toll free # and asked how many quarts of 10-30 they had? They had 67 quarts available in stock. I said I'll take them ALL!! Total was $201.00! Bingo!! Free shipping.
About a week later I received 40 quarts in 1 package, with a note saying it was being shipped in 2 Boxes, 2 weeks past and nothing, I call them up and they trace the 2nd box to a UPS depot in Jersey for Freight that was damaged in shipping, They say they will reship the missing 27 quarts, 5 days later I get the rest of my oil,no problem.
The weird thing is, about a week later I receive another box from UPS with 26 quarts of oil, slightly oily from the 1 quart that obviously leaked and damaged the whole box,[we are talkin synthetic oil here].
So, in the long run I got 93 qts of Royal purple that goes for $6.50 a qt. Which would have cost me locally $614.00 for the meager some of $210.00!!! Score One for Me!!!!! :TU: :TU:

Well, I'm know I'm setting myself up to get slammed, but I feel a need to point out a couple of things. First, I agree shipping charges are generally more than they should be. But there is more to it than that. I am in the manufacturing business and we ship a lot of product every day. Shipping costs don't just reflect the fee charged by the shipper. We're not just sitting in a garage. There is a ton of overhead in large operations that have to be covered. You mentioned the fancy box. That's one of them. Companies don't have to use them, but frankly, when I get a new item I paid good money for, I wonder about the company when it comes in a recycled tampon box with old address labels on it. I might expect that from eBay, but not a multi-million dollar company. There is also floor space used to store the boxes. And fork lifts to receive them when they come in. There's the shipping dept. itself that has to be paid for. All the equipment and computers. The people that retrieve the item from stock, those that pack the items and the support people for them. They all have salaries and benefits. All of this has to be paid for. And there's a lot more, but you get the idea. Either way you're going to pay for it. Either in the purchase price or the shipping price. I suspect they play the same game everyone else plays...make the purchase price appear competitive and make up a little of the difference in the shipping costs.

    Anyway, that's my two cents.

One problem with Year One is they sell parts for about every vehicle ever built, so they aren't experts on a single one. They probably don't know the difference between a GSX and a GTX. :puzzled:

I do not disagree with the facts, but I FIRMLY believe that these costs should be in the purchase price. Putting these costs into shipping charges is simply a way to make you think you are getting a deal and then sticking it to you after the fact.

I've had very good experiences with Ground Up! :TU:
Any time I deal with them, I ask if they will be putting out a Buick catalog soon:laugh: They have been getting some business from us...keep it up guys!

Also...on a recent order from Rockauto.com, I was charged $25 shipping for a number of small items...They were shipped from 4 different warehouses, so I suspect shipping charges were at least 2x what they would've been if they had been shipped from one location. Still a good deal, but you have to take shipping charges into consideration.

All have their good and bad points. I bought a set of repro "seal plates" from Poston's. Honestly, they look like a wood pecker has been after them for some time. Their weight and strength was about that of a potato chip. In fact, the first pair came with one split in half. So I recieved two halves and one whole one. The replacements were such a joke that I just tossed them in the trash can. No one could sell these and argue about the quality of these worthless pieces with a straight face.

A follow-up on Year One. They charge your account for the whole order, back ordered or not with the first item shipped. So anything back ordered has no further shipping charges applied even though they have to go through the whole shipping process all over for each back ordered item.
