Default olds 455 vs. buick 455

What differences are there between the two? HP/torque, you know... I have a nice 72 442 clone w/rebuilt 455 I'm considering as well as a 71GS 455 with about $8-12k difference in price. Yeah I'd like to have a 455 Buick engine sitting around but....Help me out here, I need to give someone on the board an answer about the purchase of his GS. Thanks

The engines are TOTALLY different. As different as Ford is from Mopar.

Either one can be built to make good power.

Both have terrible oiling problems that need to be addressed

having owned both engines/cars i can say you will be happy with either one. The Olds makes incredible power as well as the Buick. My 70 W-30 convert ran mid 13's back in the early 80s with street tires and no tuning whatsover beacuase I was just a kid and knew nothing. Speaks volumes for the raw potential. just stick with the best color choice. If the Olds does not have the nice ram air hood then stick with the Buick. Big difference in looks between stock and Olds ram air. Just make sure it has full air cleaner as well. tough to replace.

I'd get the GS if the Olds is just a clone.

I had an Olds W-34 455 in my '70 Toronado GT; it was the same engine Hurst used in their Hurst 442 special editions.

Personally, I like my Riviera GS '73 stage1 455 much better because, with an 8.5:1 compression ratio, it is much more practical to extract the most power our of it using readily available gas. With the '70 high-compression Olds 455, the engine would start to ping with the throttle pressed 1/2 of the way down. The ignition timing needed to be retarded, and I didn't use any vacuum advance--so my mpg was lousy.

comparing two cars about the same size and weight, I found the '73 Riviera seemed to have much more usable torque.

And although this has nothing to do with the engines, I still wish I had the Toronado for Minnesota snow and ice.

I have driven both much and in stock form I like the Buick powerplant better. The Buicks seemed to perform better to me. Plus, you have this website and it's priceless. The Olds sites don't have good info.

Kenne-Bell used to have an Olds and a Buick catalogue with drag tests listed. From showroom 14 seconds to ten sec quarter mile runs. With both cars equally prepaired the Buick was always 1/2 a second ahead of Olds in the quarter.

Car Craft 2002 and 2003 had the six big blocks in a contest. All had the same cam, compression, carb, etc. Buick was champion with 555 HP. Chevy, Mopar and Ford were at 530-540 HP. Pontiac had 501, and Olds had 497.
The Buick was pulling a VACCUM AT FULL TILT, asking for more air, so a bigger carb gave it 571HP!!!!! BUICK WAS KING OF THE HILL AT CAR CRAFT.

Angled plugs, good combustion chamber, good rod-bore-stroke ratios and big bore for breathing, etc. All adds up.

to give you an idea, the Cadillac 500 will trump the Buick for an absolute torque number .... but the Buick comes on faster. under ~2500rpm the Buick actually has more torque even though it's giving up 45 cubes.

don't forget that the Buick engine weighs ~40lbs less than an Olds as well.

We should allow oldsmobiles at our buick events to really see the difference, then maybe we would have more than 10 cars in each class that isnt TURBO ONLY...

No why would any one with an OLDS want to come only for T&T and not be able to enter on Race Day?? I wouldn't go to an event if that was the case. If it was going to be that way have it open to every make for T&T. If you limit it to just Buicks and Olds then they should both be able to Race on Race day.

But this is off topic.... So carry on... Buicks are better than Olds...
