Here are some more basic combos:

    http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.ph...t=found+combos

Then there are the guys running the stock class Buick 350s with stock carbs, stock intake, no head porting, stock lift on the cam etc and are in the mid 11s.

    1. crank, Both you and sonny seal have talked about smoothing out the casting (see pics of a ballanced but not smoothed out crank with flashing still there), nitrating, coatings, ect and BIll M also lightened the 350 crank I think? I use the ARP stud kit for the mains, heads ect. Allign hone the mains AFTER adding studs, You can rent a Torque plate for boring your 350 out if your shop does not have one.

    Mains at .0015
    Rods at .0023

I have lightened one 350 crank and smoothed it right out, I do not think we need much more than that for under 1000HP

    2. rods, for stock runner the 68-72 are fine but the 73-81 rods last although BEWARE of oddball engines with non correct rods for the date....ARP bolts are available for the late model rods. This combo is safe untill about 500 HP or really high RPM, above that step up to the Custom. OR spend BIG time and cash on the stockers.
If you go that route read this:
"The rods should be cap screw style. They should be polished along the side-beams to a mirrior finish, including, if not especially where the rod broaches at the point where it meets the crank.

Have them sonic tested and magnafluxed and checked for size and straightness before you start. Grind all casting flash and all rough edges smooth. DO NOT remove any material from the bearing radius, or you could open up too much end play. Grind the ballancing pads down as much as possible [leave a little], and THEN have them rebuilt. Big end resized, small end bronze bushed for floating pins [only if your TRW slugs accept floating pins].

After you get them back, your still not done.
Now it's time to ballance them. You can do this at home. GET THEM PERFECT, and matched to the pistons!!!
    You can also have them:
    Ion nitrited
    Hard chromed
    Directionally magnatized
    Chryogenically relaxed
..... The list goes on, just pick what looks best to you, and what your budget allows, and have it done"

Makes me want to go and get the custom rods and just be done with it.....SO I DID!

    http://www.buickperformancegroup.com...orged+350+rods

    3. Eagle SBC rods

Engine builder Brian Leibee used an off the shelf Eagle rod at 6.30 long and had Ross make custom pistons for the application, after slight machining this combo has been track proven reliable and the cheepest option so far for forged piston and rods combo:The rod used for the Buick 350 is the CRS6300SLW

    http://www.sciontist.com/ProductDeta...x?id=100005865

    or

    http://www.cnc-motorsports.com/produ...177&CtgID=8085

Just spoke to Troys Engine builder Brian Leibee and he said that it would be no problem to do another setup liek this for someone. The rods are VERY slightly narrowed, bearing tang moved and stock buick 350 bearings are used, the piston is custom made anyways so no problem to go with the SBC pin diameter.

    Info on the pistons again:
The piston builder Ross Racing Pistons. Job card # off the order sheet was 115793. Should help speed the process of ordering. Waited about 5 weeks. Pistons are a true flat top with 4 cc valve reliefs. Engine builder Brian Leibee with Leibee Precision Machine,Phone# 307-362-5049. Tell him Troy sent ya hill take care of ya.

    http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.ph...ghlight=casper

    4. pistons, well the Custom Diamond forgings are VERY NICE! inset pic here

Weisco customs were used for the Rob Margel engine, with 73 rods and arp bolts, revved great and made over 550 hp of course

The TRW pistons that you are familiar with D are the 8.5:1 forged stock replacements but check out the weight written on the back!

    5. the hyper 10:1's and stock low comp still the only ones available? 3.8 V6? Custom forgings available? what CR's?

The 10.2 Poston pistons are available and they have valve reliefs built in and under $300!

The GM 3.0 V6 piston is a flat top piston that sits deeper in the cyl wall but still makes about 12:1 commpression without decking the block (piston the valve clearance is to be measured for each application)

The stock cast pistons are easy to find for pennies

    6. cams

Lunati has a great set of fast ramp grinds (http://www.lunaticams.com/Category.aspx?id=51) that we want to try in both NA and nitrous applications although the best profile for the turbos looks to be the Poston 114 or ta 212 cam. I am starting with a poston 114 cam in the turbo car and will go custom once we learn more. Cam will be retarded for the turbo application as well.

    8. a)rockers: TA roller rockers, Poston roller rockers or SBC Burton swap (insert Bobbs threadhttp://www.v8buick.com/showthread.ph...&highlight=350
    b)head porting thread:http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.ph...ighlight=heads

9 Mark Burton goes Fast with class, so call Burton Machine today for your Custom Buick 350 parts or builds

    10.*Valvecovers

I really like the tall Poston valvecovers in Black!:
    http://www.postonbuick.com/eshop/10E...ctCode=PE90734

    Intakes- T/A, Poston, and Burton...
11*Any other suppliers yet? Any dyno runs?

GS Johnny, Darren Gun and Hector as well have put in great showings, with Hectors being a dual plane air gap!!!!!

    http://www.buickperformancegroup.com...ead.php?t=6012

The amount of hard work and decication to build a 350 intake is mind boggling! Pat on the back to Hector, Johnny, and Mark.

For anyone who does not know this already, Darryl welded up the alum singleplane inthe 80s that was used on the 551 hp Rob margel engine. Also Darryl and his Buddy were shoooting nitrous on 350s that made over 500 HP NA!

    Headers- T/A and Hooker
12*Are both still available? Any flange kits available for custom apps?

Flange kits for the Buick 350 are ordered at Burton Machine then add any custom header to his BEEFY flanges 509-860-3370 or Poston wil also make the headers in 2" for a little extra over regular headers.

    13.*Ignition- HEI, or a petronix?

For the ignition the HEI re-curved is fine for under 350 HP but above that use an MSD dist complete or the following top quality performance ignition. Mark has had GREAT luck with a Pertronix as well so do not count that out for a cheeper solution with the old points style apearance. Another way is to have daves smallboddies build you a dist.

This is what I am going to use:
    MSD
    Cap and Rotor Kit
    For GM V8 HEI
    121-8416

    HEI Low Resistance Bushing
    121-8412

    Extreme HEI Coil Dust Cover
    With Wire Retainers
    External Mounted Coil
    121-84011

    Digital-6 Plus Ignition
    121-6520

    Blaster HVC Coil
    121-8252

14*Anything new to report in this department?
Oiling system-TA sells a drill bit to enlarge passages, we can use the oversized TA pickup, adjustable regulator, order new front cover from anywhere even parts stores, a dry sump setup is in the works in my brain at least....Grooved cam bearings, baffle added to oil pan some other little tricks

15*Bring me up to date on the hot modifications
Timing cover-order one or use a good used one
    16*Still readily available new
Harmonic ballancer-do not use v6 ballancer, TA will get you setup with the right ballancer upon request I think
17*Still available new? Any trick pieces available yet?
    18*Headgaskets
Gessler has steel shims in stock for the 350, Gaskets-to-Go made us multilayered gaskets and will make another run once enough more people need them even though Cometic wants a minimum of well over 20 before it would consider it. The Gaskets to go were great to work with and offered flexable ordering and custom options like different bores without extra cost. Now we have re-usable head gaskets in ANY bore size, height, ect for any modified 350 application.

I was told by Bill M. that the thread was deleted due to unnamed members calling up TA and other vendors and being quite nasty with them. All the while, using the thread as a basis for their argument. Bill saw fit that he delete the thread to prevent further harassment.

You can rent a Torque plate for boring your 350 out if your shop does not have one.

    Good luck with renting one.

They do not have a 350 plate available to rent, I asked.

I thought I should copy this link here since the 340 uses the same bottom end as the 350 and at a .050 overbore is nearly the same block too (except for the cam and lifters):

    http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=160403

Mostly on the second page I think are the rod/piston details. This long rod motor should like to rev. The rods were cheap at about $350 but needed additional work. The pistons, at about $1200 all in, with rings, not so much. But the reciprocating weight is way down. The one thing that concerns me is the small piston pin. It's got to be about the smallest lightest piston pin ever used in one of these motors and how well it'll hold up is the real question. I wish I knew someone with actual experience in this area but it's a little late now to do much about it.

Along the way I learned that the cam gets cut down into the base circle to add lift and about .050" clearance to the shoulders of the rod is the needed clearance from the cam lobes, Also 0-ringing the decks runs about $100 and about the same for a set of copper head gaskets from SCE. Pretty comparable to mls gaskets, different pros and cons.

They have their own 350 plate, but not a plate to rent out. Got this info straight from THE top.
