Mallory comp-9000 with unilite trigger. Used a hyfire IV-A and promaster coil, but recently changed to an MSD digital 6 and an HVC blaster-2 coil.

As far as issues...see this thread http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=156899

I've a stock HEI from a late 70's something (not sure what it's from) in my 70 Lark. Nothing special, I didn't race it. Overall it has been fairly reliable.

I used stock points to trigger my MSD 6AL untiul it crapped out then just put a condensor back in and a baslast resistor to my Blaster coil and back on the road i am going to use either a Crane HI 6 or Mallory for my next builds this spring ( I have 4 to convert ) In my 64 post car i have had a Crane HI 6 and it has worked flawlessly for 10 years the MSD has been a bunch of trouble so i swear off them now forever. In talking to several shops in the area MSD has had more issues than any otehr brand. Mind you the MSD 6 in my RX7 conversion worked well but it was 20+ years old as well

I run a locked out HEI to trigger an MSD 6200AL with 2 step rpm limiter. I like HEI's wide tower spacing with high volt coils like the Hypertech 53kv unit.

An MSD starter saver module retards the sensor signal 20 degrees for starting.

The combination liked one of the 75 BBC truck vaccum advance units with 15 degrees of additional advance starting the advance at 10". The additional advance drops off quickly when the throttle is mashed, and there is no surge issue at idle with the 308 S. (A carefully dialed in adjustable unit would have worked well also.)

my '65 300cid has stock points and coil, same with the '69 350 getting swapped into it.

my 455 has an HEI that i believe came factory in later model engines. stock coil, 8mm wires. really reliable, i love it

Stock coil with Taylor 8mm wires. Autolite 24 plugs, a stock distributor with a Mr Gasket curve kit-used the gold springs, and finally, a Pertronix I Ignitor. The Pertronix I has been on the engine for 10 years and NO problems. Instant starts with this set-up.

Stock points, planning on putting Petronix in as soon as I need to mess with the points. I want to keep it all stock looking and as stock as I can with only very minor mod's that don't show, could be changed back easy, and don't show. Glad to hear that so many people have the petronix and no problems.

Update as of one year ago: points triggering MSD 6 + a MSD timing controller so I can tune on the roll.

MSD 6A and HEI with an MSD coil. Taylor 10.4mm wires. No problems in the nearly 3 years since installing.

Pertronix conversion in the 71 GS (clone) 455 and stock points in the 70 Skylark 350... never had a problem with the points. I heard good things about the Pertronix system.. the idle is way better on the 455 since I converted it over. Thought maybe I would pick up a tenth or two in the quarter???

There is nothing different between the GM 8 cylinder points distributors as far as internals. I would stay away from the lobe sensing Pertronix. I've seen them leave people stranded. The one with the ring up top seems to be more reliable. This kit will fit most GM distributors including 57-74 Buicks.

I don't like Pertronix at all, but lots of guys run them without incident. IMHO, you are better off triggering an MSD 6A(L) with the points.

Do the points last longer just being used as a trigger for the MSD box?

Also, I saw the MSD 6AL-2 on the summit racing site. What do you think about that one?
