Default NC antique auto license tag question?????

I went to the DMV today to inquire about antique tags. This is all they had to offer.

    http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_ser...&pickPlate=406

I thought I could get something that looked more like the tags that these cars had back in the day???

What is the deal?? I could have sworn there were othe antique tags offered??

You can buy any original NC tag for the year of your car from a tag restorer and display it on the rear as long as your real tag is in the trunk and available.

Some states have driving limits when you get antique tags:

    Mileage limits.
    No driving at night.
Only to and from car shows or certian events and inspections.

Make sure before you take the plunge.

your car must be 35 years old.
I would suggest you get a copy of the page from the Dmv rules that states this and keep it in your car, there will be some officer of the law that will pull you for the old tag.
Also in N.C. if your car is 35 your not required to get it inspected.

This correct. He has a 72 so he qualifies.

Also on another topic we have a new DMV inspection policy that was instituted for 35 year old and up cars without APA rule making. If you have an out of state title they will not give you an NC title without an Enfocemnt and Theft officer inspection and subsequent interview. Apparently some officers are taking the position that they will do a complete numbers inspection on your car and if any eqipment is not original only issue you a title for a "modified" car. We are in the process of hopefully getting this changed.

In NY, you can register a historic vehicle (25 years or older) with plates from that era of car. You need to take a picture of the plates (both plates need to be in the same picture) and a copy of your insurance card that states "historical". The plates have to have a registration sticker from the year of the car. Those are easily obtainable from Ebay. The NY state DMV will then register your car with those plates...for an extra fee of course!

I know most of the players. If I cannot get it changed on a voluntary administrative basis we may have to press a provision in the transportation bill in this short session of the G.A. If that is required I might post the bill number and your reps name and ask you and the NC members to call them.

I can illustrate the problem. A friend had one of his many Pontiacs with an out of state title. He was refused a title under the new DMV policy because the car is 35 years or older. He had to first make an appointment for the DMV inspector to come to his house. There is no specific time of day time for this so he loses a whole day waiting for the inspector. She shows up with a can of paint remover saying that she is going to verify that all the numbers on his pristine TA. She tells him if she cannot find the numbers they have the right to confiscate his car. She also tells him he must leave his garage while she inspects because she is looking in some "secret" places. Then she says she will have to meet him another day at DMV with all of his paperwork including ebay purchase docs to be interviewed again. So he loses another half day of work. There was nothing wrong so he gets his title after the second interview.

No if they new anything they would know that a servive repalcement engine for a 455 for instnace has no numbers in thetraditional way and location.

This is an overreaction to someone trying to get a regular title to a kit or replica car. I do not remember the car for sure but it was something like a 40 Ford replica.

Also there was a company in Alabma that was issung some titles they do not like.
