I did have to machine ~.035" off the mounting tabs of the starter to get the proper clearances between the gears. Now she seems fine and this starter is MUCH smaller and LIGHTER!

Do you know of a shield that could be used with this smaller starter? There is not much clearance between the ear on the block and one of the primary tubes close to the starter. I have had hot start problems with the old set-up and it's the same with the new one. Suggestions.

Yes. You can use the same flywheel as well. Always check the starter gear engagement with the flywheel before first start-up. This can be adjusted fairly easily by machining some off the starter or shimming the starter. Do a search and you will find more details about exactly how to do it. If you have a chassis manual it may be described there as well. There should also be instructions with the starter that shows the procedure.

i havent had any complaints about this style of starter having an engagement problem, yet??? the ones i sell are new,it is possible the housings are getting beat up turning & bouncing around in a whelabrator for 30 mins on a rebuilt unit. this will fit the 300-340-350-400-430-455(sorry nailheaders)as far as the heat problem,i have not run into this YET either, and hope not to!!!dont know of a heatshild per say...with all the room you could make one to fit...OR you might get some heat wrap & wrap the pipe that is closest.if you still have a problem, you can bypass the solenoid on the starter & hook up a fenderwell ford(ughh!!!)solenoid out of the heat zone

not the same starter, but i can hook him up with the stagered bolt pattern that he needs for the chebby for the same price.give me motor size & ignition (aftermarket or stock) & year. remember the chebby blocks are drilled for three bolt mounting, most take a staggered (2 long bolts) depending on trans-flexplate count....the BUICKS are all two straight across one long & one short bolt mounting on the right (passenger)side of the car.by the way,i do chrome & hi-output alternators also

Jamie, the starter bolted right in I didnt even have to shim it.
I will get to give it a good testing if I get to make a lot of passes this weekend at Norwalk.
    Thanks,

    Jamie,
The mini starter that you sent to me, went in easy and looks like it will do the trick of no more heat soak problems. I can't believe how fast you got it here. Of coarse I live close, but the next day! Wow and thank you

Jamie-I am having lifter failure problems with my motor but the starter I bought from you works like a charm. No shimming or adjustments needed. With all the problems one normally has with parts your starter is unbelievably good.Extremely powerful and reasonably quiet.I can't say enough positive about it.Thanks again and hope others will take advantage of your product.Rod

cray1801 talks about machining his starter to make it mesh right.he did NOT buy the starter from me i have several of you ask me about this(dont think i am putting him down, just folks think it is one of my starters) so far i have a 100% no shim,no heat soak, bolts right up and works NON FAILURE rate i spent many hours reserching whether these would be the ticket, and i use one myself 412 more sales and i can afford the body work & paint on my '65.

    >>I've received quite a few E-mails requesting my experiences associated with the starter I bought from Jamie.

    Here's the skinny:

The starter arrived well packaged, timely, and as advertised. All indications looked as if it would be happy in it's new home.

    >>Didn't do much more than tune my project and the starter decided to throw a bar. Due to a weekend thrash to get the car ready for the track I instead went with a Powermaster XS.

Jamie and I exchanged some correspondance and he offered to refund or repair. I sent it back to him for him to make the decision as to which after he inpected.

I received a refund check a week or so later.

Summary: Bad luck with the piece. Great customer service from Jamie. If timing was different I'd give the piece another shot. >>Can't beat the cost...

all the mini starters are 4 terminal.ignore the 4th if you dont use it.i have sold close to 20 of them over the last 6 months.ironically,i belive johns was the 1st or 2nd one i sold.and the only one that i know of having a problem.my supplier would not warranty it because the main reason for throwing a bar in the armature is overcranking.i stand behind what i sell, and allways give the coustomer the benefit of the doubt first time around.so i ended up eating the cost of a new armature and sold it to a local shop for a late model application, and have not seen it back since.flukes do happen, that is why i refunded john, there is allways the chance when the armature was welded, one of the bars didnt take.in this case it wouldnt take much cranking to throw one.thanks to john for telling it like it is!!!
