I previously kept one in my trunk. But now that I have a shorty console in my Buick I am keeping the fire extinguisher in there for quicker access in case of an emergency. Last summer I was driving home on the highway and saw smoke coming up through the GS hood scoops. I immeadiately pulled over, got the fire extinguisher out and opened the hood. Luckily, there was no fire - my A/C compressor had dyed and the belt on it was smoking. Cut the belt off and drove home.

I started carrying one when I converted to the EFI. Though two years later thankfully have never had a reason to need it.

Mine is mounted directly in front/under the driver seat. I wanted it within reach but not too much out in the open.

I never understood why some people decide to mount them in the trunk.
Almost every car show I go to somebody has a trunk mounted extinguisher.

I also have a bigger one on each side of my main garage door 1 on each side 1/2 way back and 2 spares in the garage..Can never be too over protected. Last summer while adding ATF to the Maggot I pulled the funnel out with just a small amount of fluid left in it. As soon as the fluid hit the header, instant ignition. Lucky for me,my extinguisher was 4 foot behind me. Was easier cleaning the yellow colored powder up than building my garage or replacing all of my cars,tools,etc..

Not in any of my cars. I wish that I could figure out a way to mount them so that they wern't in the way of something. My bride and I do have horses, and there is a fire extinguisher that is easily accessible in the barn.

That's how so many cars end up with one in the trunk. An extinguisher small enough to fit under a low seat won't put out a decent sized fire, and one that's big enough will become a projectile in a crash if not bolted down well. Basically for a daily driver it's best in the trunk where it's secured and not a danger in a crash.

Yes passenger side kick panel with a little plastic circular mount, like a heavy duty tyrap that you can pop open. My car has a ton of fuel and ignition meeting under the hood and it makes me feel good to have that little one within arms reach.

Most of us appear to have one or more extinguishers around home or somewhere in a vehicle. I have them everywhere, but it is important to point it out to anyone working with or around you. Just because they are visible doesn't mean anyone will see them. (I have experience here) I carry one for the benefit of others, since I see way more fires in other vehicles than my own. I have pulled a drunk out of a big truck laying on its side with fuel pouring out all around it. Well lucky for him it was diesel. If it was gas he may not have been so lucky and I would not be a hero.

I always have one in my old cars. The only time I ever actually had to use it was when a guys car caught fire in the pits at the GS Nats in 2008. He had a ultra fast GN race car, but apparently no extinguisher.

Cool Re: Do you keep a fire extinguisher in your car?

    Yup

I have at least one in each vehicle. I think I had 3 or 4 of them in my JEEP when I had that. I needed them for what I did with it .

I have at least 12 of them around the house.

I keep it right behind the driver's seat in the Roadmaster. They were required in most shows around here going back 35 years.
Come to think of it, I should have one in my daily driver too.

    Always!

I did have to use mine 8 years ago to put out a fire in my engine bay after the steel line that feeds the Qjet got a pin sized hole in it after changing out a fuel filter. Small hole leaking fuel on the intake in 110 degree summer spells disaster. Thanks to the extinguisher (that my Mom got me as a gift) I only had to do a major cleaning of the engine bay and replaced the fuel line. Had I not had it, I would have been replacing the entire car.

Every car gets one now and I keep a large one in the garage and kitchen. To cheap not to have a few around.

Another question for those of you who have one or more extinguishers in various places: How many of you get them inspected at least once a year? I used to work for a big oilfield service company - one of my "additional duties" was monitoring the annual inspections of our shop safety equipment. We had (as I recall) about 40 or 50 fire extinguishers (it was a big shop). Some guy came around once a year and took care of checking all of them. He told me once that (based on his experience) probably half of all the extinguishers "in the field" were useless due to lack of proper maintenance. If you don't check it once in a while, it may not work when you need it. Add it to your annual maintenance program.

I guess a fire extinguisher would be a good thing to keep in the car just in case.
