I had thought about using that paint for 2 coats for the heat strength (600*). For a 3rd coat, I several cans of krylon buick red which is only 300*

Typically the more paint that is on an engine the more likely it will burn. I think that is because the thicker the paint the longer it holds the heat. I read an article one time that said to put the paint on so that everything is evenly covered and stop. I used Bill Hirsch purchased in a quart.

After a fruitless search most of yesterday for the Rustoleum Universal Red Engine enamel recommended by Jim W. I gave up and bought the Dupli-Color #1653 Red and it looks awesome on the valve covers. Will be painting pan and engine block in about a week when engine is back together.

Do not use CARS Buick red enamel engine paint as it has a distinct pink hue and does not have the pigment depth of the Dupli-color. I could not find the Krylon paint anywhere even though I used it three years ago and could find it.

Super Walmart stores have a huge spray bomb selection, including Krylon. Did you try there? Amazon also sells spray paint -saves from having to go to WMart.

Gerry, I used the Eastwood product and was very pleased. Maybe it isn't quite factory but I have not had anyone knock the appearance of my motor. Pic in my sig

Matt, after being told by my local Home Depot that they did not have the Rustoleum red engine enamel, only blac, they looked it up on the computer and said the next closest Home Depot, (20 miles away) had 11 cans of red. Drove there, searched all their spray paint, even auto section in case it was there and no luck. Staff member looked it up on computer and it said "not a store stocked item" Not sure how the previous employee saw 11 cans at the store and more cans at other stores. While the black was at both stores there was no place listed next to the black (and white) colors to stock the red. Then I went to the Super Wal Mart next door to the Home Depot and looked and they had a lot of spray paint but no Rust Oleum Red Engine enamel or correct Krylon red. That is why I gave up and went to Dupli-Color and I am happy with valve covers and will paint the pan to day, then the block next week.

Here is my oil pan with one coat of Dupli-color #1653 this afternoon and several more coats to come after light sanding. I like the red color as it is close to the Krylon color I used in 2014 on the 67 coupe.

In previous threads on this site, Duplicolor DH1608 was a recommendation for the closest match to OEM engine paint. It was a slightly satin sheen. Unfortunately, that has been discontinued.

The DE1653 looks to be quite glossy.

Has anyone compared the 1608 and the 1653 with respect to the color itself? Is glossy or satin closest to OEM?

    Thanks.

Art, the Dupli-Color 1653 is glossy but I have seen glossy engine paints lose some of the gloss as the heat builds up over time. The Dupli-Color is a 500 degree paint. Unless you are going for a 400 judged car I don't think the glossy inhibits things as by the time you bolt all the equipment on the engine and the air cleaner, hoses etc. not sure how much glossy will show other than valve covers and a bit of the intake.

Hi, TA still sells krylon 2114 which looks great. I bought 3 cans about a month ago. I tried the cars paint and agree was too pink. Thanks,

Rust-oleum is cheaper at Summit than Dupli-color 1653 as it is $6.99 a can but Advanced Auto Parts gives you 20% off if you register with them. So I bought some cans at $5.60 at Advanced. CARS charged me $32.00 to ship ten cans by USPS surface only. Cheaper for me to buy Dupli-color locally. I did get a full refund for the ten cans and shipping from CARS.

Thanks for your $0.02 worth! I appreciate it. While I have used the DH1608, it just doesn't look quite right to my eye.
At this point, I think I will go the 1653 route and standardize on that.

    Thanks again for your thoughts.
