    Default 340 performance parts

I am very new to 340 Buicks and need some assistance on hopping up this engine. I am looking for intake, dual springs, forged pistons, con rods and cams. I notice Crane and Edelbrock make cams, but I would like guidance on a HiPo street set up. I have a Apollo GT 5000 (not Buick Apollo) that has a 340 Buick engine and T-10.

I will use it for road rallies and need power between 2000-5000 rpms.

    thanks for the help.

Well, the 340 is not the best choice to "hot rod"...there just aint much out there to build it up with, I know Iski makes a cam for it, I don't know of any aftermarket intakes and from what I'm told nothing will interchange with it from the 300 and such, TA makes a set of headers for it, as far as rods and pistons, that I don't know...........I was lucky that my 340 was a factory 4 bl motor and its not rated to bad stock, I went to a Eddy carb and dual exhaust with Flowmasters and thats all I'm doing. Best of luck and if you come across anything to help it, let us know cause ANYTHING is helpful when it comes to the 340!!....HEY, welcome to the V8Buick forum!!

    Default 340 performance

Nice engine. What are HP and torque did you get out of the mods?

    Default Hi, James

    Are you sure it's a 340 and not a 300?
I am not a expert on the Apollo GT 5000's - but i believe the 5000 stands for 5 litres which a 300 is. check the heads, intake - if there aluminium. it's a '64 300 buick

    if it's all aluminium it's a 215 = 3.5 litres - hence, Apollo GT 3500

cams and springs are out there from many venders - pistons (forged) will be special order as would the rods

a Edelbrock/carter carb would be the way to go

post or send me some pictures

I think Poston's has the most performance goodies I have seen for the 340.

They will not have any intakes, nobody has one for the 340.

I thought The Apollos had the 65 300 cid engine(all iron)? Did they make some with the 215? The last one I saw was @ Amelia Island Concours, it had the iron 300 (according to the placard-I'm not sure if I trust that!). At the time I thought the 64 engine would be the most logical Buick engine for it. Nice combination of displacement and aluminum heads+intake. Way ahead of its time!

Could we see some pictures? I love the Apollo!

Im not even sure yet, that picture was from Monday night and Tuesday and today it has been in the exhaust shop. I only drove it from one town to another and didnt test it out cause there was nothing after the headers and I didnt want to make to much noise. I should be getting it back today after school, and I dont know when I can dyno it but I'll tell you how it feels.

    Default Apollo GT 5000 info

The Apollo 5000GT came with either a 215 aluminum engine (early cars), 300 with aluminum heads (later cars) or as ordered by the customer. One even had a Vette engine. Mine was one of the four never purchased after the bankrupcy. Milt Brown, who started the company, never registered or sold the car. It is all original (paint, interior, engine, etc etc). The engine is weeping oil due to 30 years of storage. I only will do interior adjustments to increase HP and torque (valve job, stronger con rod bolts, mild cam, springs etc).

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. This is a great board. I'll post pixs soon.

Milt lives 20 miles from my house. The Apollo was built in the San Francisco Bay Area and was pretty visible during the filming of Herbie the Love Bug. The Apollo is driven by the "bad guys" in the movie.
