I saw this on a 70 Riv in that area. Every Flint built car I have seen hada this near the voltage regulator. There is something else written in the transmission tunnel of your car. 08 mayb?

The only thing in the transmission tunnel was the job sequence number "3112" that matches the build sheet. This was done in white. I'll keep looking and cleaning.

Yup, there's an 08 above the transmission tunnel. What does it mean? the "50" is the paint code, but I'm not sure what the 08 is. The job sequence number came off while I was cleaning. The "50" and "08" were underneath a layer of paint that I cleaned off. If I paint the firewall should I restore these markings or the "3112" markings?

As for the markings I would put everything back exactly as it was. What was the second code on your data plate after code 50? Was it a vinyl top code? Maybe dark brown which would be F....Interesting thing is code F vinly top is also code 8. So maybe your car was Bamboo with Dark brown top?

Nick took picture after picture of the markings on my firewall and put them on and wiped them off several times until he was satisfied that they exactly matched the way the assembly line worker quickly scrawled them on 40 years ago. By now he could probably cash checks for the guy if he's still alive!

The paint code "50" would indeed be UNDER a thin layer of black firewall paint since it was put on there BEFORE the car was painted, while at the Fisher Body plant, not on the final assembly line. Many people find these paint codes when they strip their firewall and mistakenly reapply the paint code OVER the top layer of black paint during the restoration, which is not correct. We often also find the code for the vinyl top, or a "V", or even the word "vinyl" under the black paint as well. If you reapply those codes with a good grease pencil (like the factory) and if the paint is thin (like the factory) the code will still be slightly visible because of the texture, but not the color.

There are however many codes/numbers/letters that are over the top of the final black paint, and would be correct to reapply over the black paint. These were use on the final assembly line. Examples are the M, D, or C that are often found on most of the '70-72 cars built at Flint.

So if you find a code by steam cleaning or washing, it should probably be on top of the black, if you find it under black paint, well that's obvious that it goes on before the black.

Gary, I wil have to disagree. I have found many cars over the years with the paint and top codes over the black paint and never under it. Mostly from the flint Plant.

Here is an orignal owner GS 455 Flint built. Clearly the paint code can be seen over the black. I spoke to the owner at length and firewall has never been touched.More to come.

I have also been forturnate enough to examine several original untouched 70 GSX's that have passed through some friends hands and have observed the QQ and 10 10 paint codes written in crayon over the black paint.

They may have done things differently at different plants because it wasn't until I took the SOS pad to the firewall did the paintcode become visible. Also, I "sanded" off the "3112" and the 08 appeared beneath it.

I have yet to hear from anyone that had the job sequence number in white on the transmission tunnel.. Is this just how the Leeds Plant did things?

All this information is great though, I appreciate everyone's input on this.

Here is the cowl tag. I believe 178 is black deluxe interior, so I believe the top should be black - unless I am missing something.

Have stated this before but will again 'cuz I find it interesting and hope you will too. My Freemont car with a special paint order left Freemont with body color firewall and "Spec" written above the tranny tunnel.

my 72 stage 1 (Fremont ca. plant) was purchased of a guy in Colorado. when I took off front license plate I noticed yellow chalk marks on the chrome bumper the number was 1391. I assumed it was assembly line markings. because the previous owners could not wash off chalk because of plate being there all those years. but when I removed the reinforcement on the back side of bumper behind the license plate I cleaned it up good with soap & towel . the number stamped on the part was 39 on the opposite side was gm part number.

Of course, a 71 could be different. Before you accept black take a brass tooth brush and clean the top of yours.
HeyJim, did you ever post a picture of the steering box? I have been searching and can't find it.
