Andrew, I have a 72 Skylark convertible with a white interior. I have just bought a GS hood and I am in the process of turning it into a GS clone. I am also thinking of painting the hood black like the GSX's and adding a rear spoiler. My body guy thinks that black stripes on orange will look better than white stripes. I am going to try this as I will have to repaint the whole car next year so why not try the black stripes on a hood I have to paint anyway. I am hoping to get it all done in a month. I will post pictures when I am done.

Yes Tim I would be very interested in seeing pics of your car when you are finished. I hope the paint job goes well for you. And by the way are you going to put the side stripes on the car along with the hood stripes? The reason I ask this is because around the black portion of the side stripes you have the two smaller red stripes that outline on the top and the bottom. And that was one of my concerns on how the red part would show up on Flameorange. Anyhow post em when ya get em. Thanks.

For right now I am going with just the hood striping as I will be painting the whole car in the future, I just want to get the GS hood on this summer.
I am also thinking about striping the trunk lid with black stripes to match the hood like the Olds 442's and Chevelle's did.
    What do you think?

Well that is entirely up to you, it probably would look nice. But I was reading in your other post about making your car look like a clone, are you still trying to achieve this? Or do you want to stray off and do something else?

I had a 72 skylark, not GS with the stripe package. At the time I was not told how they got there I just liked the car and bought it. Would a dealer put them on or would someone have to buy them and do it themselves.

I have a white 68 GS 400 convertible and am considering adding the red stripes along the rocker panels. Does anyone know what the dimensions were on these stripes? I've seen them in several Buick photos and they appear to be 3/8" and 1" and run just at the bottom of the door.

The 68 stripes were actually decals.. and they are reproduced by phoenix graphics..

    70 (All or nothing)
They were all Big Blocks and came with stripes, rear spoiler, grill & dash emblems, hood tach, front spoiler, rallye ride package, quick ratio Power steering, or manual steering, G60-15 Goodyears, 15x7 Chrome wheels, and sport mirrors.

    71-72 (A-La-Carte)
The basic GSX option included stripes, rear spoiler, grill & dash emblems and sport mirrors. (There is at least 1 example that did not include the mirrors.)

The other options, such as hood tach, front spoiler, rallye ride package, G60-15 Goodyears, 15x7 Chrome wheels were all options that could be ordered seperately. Some even came with vinyl tops.

    Here are 2 examples;
My 71 Stratomist Blue GSX has a deluxe black front bench with fold-down armrest interior, with an in-dash tach and gauges. (No hood tach.) It did come with G60-15 /chrome wheels, Stage 1 engine, automatic, and 342 posi, but may not have been ordered with a front spoiler.

I also had a 71 350 GSX, with an in dash tach and Gauges, (no hood tach or front spoiler), front bench with armrest interior, standard 2 spoke steering wheel, standard ratio power steering, and no rally ride.

So only GSX's came with the factory stripes, even the 71-72 varieties.

Now there are supposedly a few cars out there with dealer added stripes. I have never seen any documentation, but even if I did, they would still not be GSX's. They would only be GS's with a Dealer installed stripe package.

The 71-72 WA5 GSX Ornamentation package did not include D35 Sport Mirrors.
Sport Mirrors were an option on all 71-72 GSX cars.71-72 GSX's came standard like any skylark or GS with a non remote chrome mirror on drivers door.

Duane if you look at the copy you have of my original window sticker it shows the sport mirrors as a option in 71. Richard I believe you also have a copy verifying what you are saying.

    Rich/Marty,
You are correct the Sport mirrors were not part of the 71-72 GSX package but were seperate options. I did not pick up on this until I started digging through my paperwork after seeing Bob Cristo's 71 GSX.
    Duane

PS. A bunch of the 72 cars came with chrome mirrors.

    Hi Andrew,

If you can find a copy of the Magazine "MuscleCars" Jan. 1995 it has some good pics of Bryan Brown's 72 Orange GSX with a black vinyl top. Also featured his 70 Yellow GSX as well as his 71 Lime Mist GSX also witha black vinyl top.

PS : Duane I know you were just testing us about the mirrors

He showed me some pictures he took of the car when it was about a month old to prove this. Funny story...he used to have to go to work down a dirt road for about a mile and a half to get to the pavement and during this daily trek he would always hear a sharp metallic "clanging" coming from the LHS rear wheelhouse area....after about 6 months he got frustrated enough to investigate; turns out someone had thrown 4 (!) GS/by Buick front grille emblems down in front of the wheelhouse and there were just crashing around into each other. A few extras on the line that day?
That was SOP at the end of a shift.

At the Framingham plant in 1972, sandwiches, soda cans, bolts, etc. were thrown into areas of the car that were closed off....that is whay a lot of cars had rattles.....
