    Great work Jamie!
Tossed on old pinkie & swapped the wireing conversion you provided and wow what a differance. Volt meter is dead on 14 + with no fluctuations unlike the old one. Starts, runs and launches like a new animal now.
I didnt think the Alt change would effect how the car runs this much...but damn
Its a very happy wagon now!

    thank you very much!

the only downside is that now I have to find a way to talk her out of pink plug wires

Hey, i'm running a 455 in an 83 regal. will be running a mild stereo (amp, maybe one small sub, nothing crazy i listen to rock, not booming rap) i am running a mechanical fan, a 6A ignition. hm, what else, nothing else crazy realy, I will however be uprgrading to a decent electric pump to feed the big block, as the mech pump doesn't quite keep up at times.

I bought a chrome 105 amp off ebay last year, well, i broke a bolt off in it, and had to drill it out, and don't like that. i'd like one wire, but found it difficult with the last one to actually keep my batt charged. even though i was not running any extras *my bat is in the trunk, with actually overkill gagued wire*

What do i need, how do i wire it (have a remote mounted starter solenoid) maybe i need a mini starter as well, but before that. what do i do? i just can't seem to figure out why i can't keep my bat charged.

is it a cs style alt or the 10 SI? the 1 wire hi-output 10-SI needs to use the plug to excite & sense at low rpm, those cooling fans are killers.the cs 1 wire works fine as-is,but sometimes needs to see 1200-1400 rpm for the initial turn on.
on a 1 wire setup the trick is to run the alternator battery lead to the positive solenoid stud on the starter.if you run 10-12 feet of wire back to the trunk you will have a votage drop, which is my guess as to your problem.take a voltage reading at the alt stud & at the battery,it shouldnt differ more than .40-.50 of a volt MAX!,if so too much wire or poor material/too small gauge of wire.also depending on manufacturer the regulators are set anywere from 14.0 to 14.8,i use the 14.8.

Hey, what would you reccomend? i could easily relocate the bat to the front of the car, i probably will. and just keep the old wire ran for when the car "leaves" the road, to go to just a track car. but untill then (years) i guess i should just have the bat under the hood. I don't know what kind of alt it was. it has the spot to plug into the harnes (my harnes was hacked, missing stuff) but i have a replacement. I'd like to run just the one wire, it seems simple and efficient to me. so i just run from the stud to the pos on the sol? i'm also figuring that the alt i bought wasn't to high quality. I don't have fans now, nor will i for some time, not probably untill the car is coming off the road for some real work (tub, tires... you get the pic) so let's say i don't have fans.

Just a nicely built big block, a six A, and a decent rock'n'roll stereo.
What do i need? and how much? it's time for me to drive my beast!

    Hello, Jamie.

I must have missed it as I scrolled through, but I didn't see any with polished (and, possibly, clear powdercoated) aluminum cases. Is such an option available in the 140-amp GM style?

What's you're turn-around time for something like that these days?

I'll go ahead and PM you with specifics if such an animal is available.

Thanks for making stuff like this available to us, by the way.

I havent done any powdercoating as of yet.The one above is painted flat clear.I have a member that sent his housings to Jim Weise for polishing then he's sending them back to me for the assembly. You might check with Jim,i can drop-ship the housings direct to him if you want to go that route

Well, it looks as though I can go in two different directions:

1 - Purchase a plain one with the fan and dual-groove pulley and take it apart and have it polished and clear-coated, or...

2 - Work out a way for you to ship the housing halves to me so I can get them polished, coated and sent back to you for assembly.

I'm sure #1 will kill my warranty (as it should), plus I may do some damage. In fact, can the alternator be disassembled, housing halves gutted and polished, without damaging it? I mean, can one be completely disassembled and reassembled with normal hand tools?

I suspect that #2 will be the only way I can protect my warranty, although it may be a hassle for you regarding billing, shipping back and forth, etc.

    What do you think???

Dan,the 140amp CS alternators are a bit of a pita to disassemble since the stator leads are soldered rather than nut & bolt as in the early DN & SI units. They also have a cooling baffle that has to be staked just perfect or it will rub on the rotor.I have no problem shipping the housings direct to you to play with, then ship them to me & i can build it from there.

Well, as usual, Jamie came through like a champ.

I got exactly what I ordered in a timely fashion at a good price. He even put up with the hassle of shipping the housing to me prior to assembly so I could get them polished.

    Thanks, Jamie.
