Default Update your old block girdle W/O-ring seal

I spoke to Mike at TA today and I asked him if he would be willing to update one or two of my block girdles, by adding the O-ring groove around the pan rail area like his new ones have. This is a much better way to stop oil leaks and seal up your Buick big block!
He is willing to do this, but he would like to know if we could round up 10-15 people that want the same upgrade done. If we can, he will give us a decent price on this service and get them done ASAP. It's cheaper per unit if you can amortize the machine setup cost over a larger number of units to machine.

Anyone want their block girdle upgraded with O-ring seals?
Lets get a list going of names. I'll start with two girdles.

I would like to, also. Problem is, the engine is together and I don't want to pull everything apart right now just for that. Next time it comes apart I'd like to install better rods and pistons, also.

    What is the timeline?

    Default Block Girdle

I would like to get them to Mike and back ASAP. I realize that not alot of people just have their block girdle laying around waitng to be used. It just so happens that I do. I think I'll let this post up until the end of February. If we have 5 or 6 then so be it. It would be better to have more, BUT I'll just let Mike know at that time how many we have and get a definite price and lead time.
Worst case I'll take mine to work and make a program to run on one of the CNC VMC's. Not my first choice though, as I'm sure with TA's experience, knowledge of the girdle's, and the fact they have an existing program and fixture for their CNC, I believe they would do a much better job.
By the third week of Feb, I'll try to get everyone that wants theirs done to send them to TA so they all arrive at the same time. We will need to set a deadline. I'll pick a date and tell Mike that any time after this date he's free to machine them. If you send it in too late, then you might not get it done with this "batch".
I'll be gone a good portion of this next week and all of the following week. (Feb 12th -19th Going to Japan for my day job). I'll attack this when I return.
    Thanks, Steve

Steve....do you happen to know when Mike may be CNC'n a fresh batch of new girdles so that maybe our's could just be included as then the set-up is already there and ready to go???

Also....I'm going to stamp my girdle with my name on the top of the center (#3) main for identification and to insure I do indeed get mine back. Everyone else may also want to do something like this too.

    Default girdle

I don't know when his next batch will be run, but it sounded like he just finished some and wouldn't be doing another batch for awhile. With all I have going on right now I should have not started this.
I'll try to get in touch with him in the next few days, but it might not happen until I get back from Japan. If I find anything out before that, I'll post it.
    Thanks, Steve

Actually, I'm kind of hoping he accidently sends me the wrong one. Chances are, I wouldn't get one back that looks like it's been in close contact with a hand grenade. Steve, I'd go for it, provided cost and time don't prohibit.

    Default Girdle Upgrade

    OK,
I talked with Mike today and he said he needs ten minimum to tear down the CNC and set it up for these. I don't blame him. He will not be doing more NEW girdles for at least a year or longer. (He just completed a batch not long ago)
We have 6 or maybe 7 that we can send him. If we cant get 3 or 4 more in the next few days, we'll have to wait. He would be able to get them done in about 4 weeks. (I know this whole idea was based on bad timing! Sorry) The cost would be $85 per, if we can pull this off.
I'll give it until Monday the 27th. If we don't have a commited number of 10 girdles, I'll drop it.
    Thanks, Steve

Steve, that deadline sounds good as if things go beyond that if will interfere with getting the race motor back together.

    Default Not enough

I guess that I gave it long enough. We simply don't have the quantity that Mike needs. Maybe we'll try this again in late fall or early winter (better timing?).

    Default More time...

Hopefully the girdle will still be in one piece this fall/winter to receive the o-ring. We'll have to see who can set the HP record for a stock crank. This year there should be a few cranks getting the crap beat out of them with the new Limited Street class.
